Purifoy arrested for marijuana

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in the early morning hours on Sunday.

Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy faces a misdemeanor marijuana charge.

The sophomore was given a notice to appear just after midnight when an officer from the Gainesville Police Department pulled over a car he was a passenger in for a right-of-way violation.

According to the arrest report, Purifoy was in the back seat. One of the passengers threw a cannabis cigarette out of the window, but a police officer identified "a baggie containing 2.5 grams of cannabis" near the emergency brake.

Purifoy has a preliminary court date set for 9 a.m. on Feb. 21, according to Alachua County court records.

His arrest marks the eighth for the Gators on a marijuana-related charge since Will Muschamp took over as head coach.

"Coach Muschamp is aware of the incident and is handling it," a UF spokesman said.

During the 2012 season, Purifoy recorded 51 tackles and broke up five passes. He also forced three fumbles and blocked two kicks.

On Wednesday, Muschamp told the Orlando Sentinel Purifoy will begin spring practice at wide receiver, where the Gators are short on depth. He played some receiver late in the year for Florida and had one catch for five yards.
