Being in the SEC is a serious advantage in several ways. I cannot recall a recruit of worth saying, "I want to play football in the ACC!!" That quote does not happen if the recruit has offers from Florida, Georgia, LSU or Bama. Now fsu does well with recruiting players, but the continual lack of development of the players and success on the field once they are there points to habitual underachievment. That eventually catches up to you. Being a member if the SEC affords you a recruiting advantage for those that want to play the best of the best. And it IS an advantage. Other schools recruit well that are not in the SEC, because we just can't get them all. fsu recruits well because of famu and the allure from the 1990's and early 2000's. Today's kids are less likely to remember that success from so long ago. That allure has lost luster. Today's kids remember Tim Tebow's Promise and five years of total SEC dominance in the BCS. This season, UF has done well to outrecruit the school in Tallahassee. We need to see a few more years of this, but I think it is the beginning of a trend.

There is serious value in being in the SEC. Playing the likes of Maryland, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Georgia Tech... ehh... Not exactly what kids from the South dreamed about.

Florida/Georgia, LSU/Florida, LSU/Bama, Tenessess/Bama, Bama/Auburn, Georgia/Tennessee, Florida/Tennessee those are matchups that everyone from coast to coast turn the TV on for. It is football at its finest. Any discerning eye can see the difference in the level of play. The caliber of players on the field (both sides) is truly unmatched. The talent on draft day is SEC first and everyone else second. Don't think that High School kids don't see that...

Secondly, the SEC will command the largest financial payout for TV rights. Being a member of the SEC will afford a HUGE financial influx. Schools like fsu are miles behind us financially, why bring a rival back into a race they long since lost? As the Major Conferences finish out this expansion, the SEC, Pac12, Big10 and it looks like the Big12 will pick over the carcasses of the Big East, Notre Dame, and the ACC to select the final positions in the elite 64. It will be the SEC and Big10 and then everyone else (at least financially) and a whole new ball game will begin with the ability to pay major money for coaches, facility upgrades, etc. The only spot left for a school like fsu would be the Big12. Frankly, that is where they would fit best. Academic standards are lower, membership in the AAU is not a big deal and it would bring a market they covet to their TV package and expand the Big12's natural recruiting area. But in the end, the money will never be the same as SEC and Big10 money. There will be a greater separation of the haves and the have nots.

The SEC is in a position to dictate a great deal here moving forward. New alliances for the SEC will be based on increased TV revenue and improved Academic standing. For those "out west", their school brings neither.

  • I got it... UF does not want FSU in the SEC; Understand... This thread has made that very clear.

The question is - does the SEC want the Big 12 in the Florida market IF it scoops up FSU and possibly Miami (although I'm less certain on that). And if the SEC does NOT want the Big 12 reaching into the Florida market, what will it do?

Will it (the SEC) concede and add FSU and take one of Clemson or Ga Tech (assuming Ga Tech does not go to Big 10). UF may be against it, but might be in the minority... Just throwing out hypotheticals - but it might be worth noting, b/c that seems somewhat likely.

The ACC is currently "in the Florida market" with FSU and Miami. What's the difference if it just switches to the Big 12 being "in the Florida market?" Ho-hum. That's not a reason to invite FSU. If anything it could hurt recruiting as now FSU will be playing road games way out in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa. Think parents will be thrilled about that? At least in the ACC they had games in Georgia, South Carolina, Miami, and North Carolina.

I understand the power play FSU will try to use in which you guys want us to take FSU to prevent Big 12 in Florida. I think the SEC is smart enough and will say, go ahead come to Florida. It’s nothing personal but they (SEC) want newer markets. The Big12 can come into Florida and SEC is fine with that. The BIG12 is not a "level" conference like the SEC, what I mean by that is that there is Texas and everybody else. Texas has its own network and it cares less about the Big12. The SEC is more united as a group, the original members are still here, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Miss State, Tennessee and Vandy and I guarantee you every member will fight for another to stay in the SEC. They will also fight to keep certain schools out. We work as a unit in which they don't have a true "Texas" type of school where one is more favored then another (yes Bama could be argued to be a bit favored but they don't have their own TV deal). We are not the minority in which we don’t want FSU; you can now probably throw in Texas A&M and say we won't add another Texas school as long as you block these schools. They don't want to have another Texas school in the SEC because it makes them Unique.

I'd have to agree. And the real question is "Is Florida enough for the SEC to be able to demand a subscriber fee from every cable company in Florida for the eventual SEC network?" It is. So the SEC does't need FSU. The SEC needs to expand into new markets --- NC and VA. If it's smart, FSU will go to the Big 12 now and join forces with MD to litigate te 50m fee they didn't vote for. The ACC's TV rights / network possibilities are poor; the Big 12s are huge in comparison.

Remember we are not only selling UF to the cable company, we are selling the SEC, maybe UF can't say pay this fee but the whole SEC can. We are negotiation on behalf of every other member. That’s our main point, you get all other SEC members if you pay us. Adding FSU really doesn’t help in that case. It might make the case a bit stronger but it’s not significant enough.

  • Rumors floating that UNC and UVa are heading to the B1G....ACC in talks with Cincy, UConn and L'ville.

Also got this gem from TNole:

    two things:

    1. Barron is smart. His comments this past summer regarding the ACC was his version of "marking his territory" vis a vis the BOT.

If there is a cabal in the SEC for FSU then we can go to the SEC. I think long term the money is better in the big 12 because Texas, OU and FSu are more marquee names than Bama, Uf, LSU. One issue is if the big 12 can work out a deal for a big 12 network that may dovetail with a Longhorn network or may absorb the Longhorn network. With us, OU and UT it would have more national appeal than the SEC network.

Execs in the SEc will privately admit that making adding MiZZOU was a misatake. As one said to a couple of people I know in the television industry, "The same reasons that make Rutgers and Nebraska better than Mizzou in the big 10 make many teams better than Mizzou for the SEC. Very few sets being turned on by Mizzou and little sEc network potential in Missouri."

when asked "but they do add b-ball", the response was who cares because ky is the only team anyone watches from the SEC and b-ball fans watch other conferences anyway."

The exec "thinks" (has been told ) that most of the SEc wants to add us and VT. However, there appears to be issues that the SEc has its ducks in a row (like the MiZZOU situation) and it is probable they wait too long to add us-as in we pick another conference. "

no. we offer 2 more rabid fanbases and even better football matchups. the SEC isnt interested in that at this point and wants to expand to other markets.

So you're basically just reiterating what I said and making my point for me. If the SEC isn't interested in "2 more rabid fanbases and even better football matchups", then that's pretty much the equivalent of offering nothing to the SEC if it holds no value to them at all.

  • If UNC and UVA go to the Big 10, then I think FSU will be gone and the ACC will be done as we know it...

It may wait it out a little more to see if the SEC comes calling (which we agree to disagree to an extent), but the BIG 12 will come calling sooner or later...

SEC fans should see who NCSU hires as their new HC... because that university will more than likely be the new school added to the SEC (with Va Tech?)...

The rumor for years was UF and SC would stick together blocking FSU and Clemson.

That is FSU wives' tales. UF has supported FSU at every turn to get in to the SEC going back decades and multiple attempts. ...that is...until the TV deal changed recently. AS it stands today, I can not imagine any conference member in the SEC, including UF, supporting the entry of Clemson or FSU.

You can't be serious about UNC or UVA going to the Big Ten, can you? Smh. Big Ten has a couple of good institutions but they aren't on the same level academically as far as UNC, Duke, UVA, Wake etc.. As an UVA grad, I'd be shocked if they went to Bug Ten. Too much pride in basketball (Duke, UNC) to play Big Ten IMO.

Not that I totally disagree - but I'm more repeating the rumors are constantly be discussed. I could definitely see UVA and UNC in the Big 10; both are AAU institutions and would be greatly appreciated by the Big 10. I think both are excellent fits and would bolster the elite "thought" of the conference. If the ACC begins to crumble, there is no doubt those two would be heading to the Big 10 - it makes sense.
