Who surprises us this year?

  • Two part question.

First off, we're at 17 commitments with anywhere from 6-8 spots left and its still only JUNE. As anyone who follows recruiting knows, there will always be surprises, twists, turns, etc in the process. I know it seems like we have the board figured out and the remaining spots will go to that group, but is there anyone out there you guys have in mind that could sneak into this class? I'm guessing we'll have atleast one or two guys who sign with us on NSD, who none of us are thinking about right now.

Maybe a guy like David Dawson, Jaynard Bostwick, McGee, Stevenson, Chris Thompson, Desean Smith, Joe Fennel, Josh Mercer, Trenton Brown, Shaq Wiggins, Derrick Calloway, Reggie Wilkerson, etc.. Who knows how the season plays out. UF could show they're on a major upswing while another team underachieves and their coach becomes "hot seat" material. Maybe someone switches.

For me, I'd still really like to see another DT in this class. Maybe a longshot like Mike Hill, Bostwick, GIlmore, Pagano, or someone else.

    Second part is this..

Who on our current team surprises us this year on the field, both offense and defense? Does a true freshmen come in a light it up? Does a guy who's been here for a year or two step up and show that the proverbial "light" has come on? Doesn't have to be a superstar, just a guy who might have shown flashes before, or not, but will be productive this year?

Maybe Frankie Hammond turns into a reliable option in his last year with a real QB and OC? Not huge, but something like 35-40 catches, 500 yards, etc..

Maybe Darrin Kitchens continues his decent play he showed in the FSU game when McCray was out. I was pretty impressed with him at the SAM in that game. He's got some good size and great speed, but seemed reluctant in the new scheme. Does he play ahead of Morrison?

Does PIttman step up as a go to guy? Does Dunbar become the number one option he should be this year? Does Debose continue to show his deep threat ability, but do it more often while becoming a good screen type guy with his nasty speed?

Does Okine get any kind of production this year? He's another who I thought looked pretty good in the FSU game. Frankly, when Easley and McCray were out of the lineup, we looked pretty good with Okine/Kitchens/Taylor out there. Does Taylor get more rub as Outside LB or in the middle, etc..?

    What say you?

    What say you?

This is a fun topic. Thanks for starting it. Couple of observations:

On #1 above: Do you mean to say all those guys are long shots? I'm not sure I would put Pagano in that category.

On #2: This is a tough one, since I've been predicting his break out year for 2 years straight now. I just look to him to supplement the production of the other 3. Plus with the focus on the TE in this offense, I'm not sure many balls are going to come Frankie's way, unfortunately. He's a kid whose nice tools never really translated.

On #3: Darrin Kitchens is someone who we need to bring it, and I think he will. He's got a very aggressive mentality. But we shouldn't read too too much into his performance against FSU, since their offense is pretty pedestrian. Still he's a guy I expect to take a step up this year. As for Morrison, he's a kid who is going to be hard to keep off the field IMO. I think these guys will split snaps, with the bulk going to Kitchens until someone owns the role.

On #4: I fully expect Pittman to be a viable SEC receiver this year. when he grows accustomed to SEC speed of the game. He's got the tools to be a great fit in our O. He's a physical receiver and that is critical in the SEC, where most of your schedule is going to jam and challenge your receivers at the LOS. I think Debose is going to surprise people in this offense for the simple reason that we can scheme him open better. He has the natural gifts, but was asked to play a fairly narrow role last season, in an offense that was not flexible or adaptable. One thing I think we can say for Pease is that he adapts.

On #5 (Okine): Expecting solid but unspectacular play. I just don't see a huge Senior year leap for a guy whose been hanging around the bottom wrung of the DE roster for 4 years. He's got the size to be a good runstopping SDE. Does he have the quickness and motor to be an every down guy? I have my doubts. Hope to be surprised.

  • I can't answer the first part because I don't really think there will be any surprises unless the coaches strike out big again. I think they will only want to wait on Tunsil and VH3 on NSD. But there could be surprises and you pretty much named everyone I was thinking about I could see Mercer getting a spot but I really doubt it and maybe if the coaches want another WR they go after one of the Lincoln kids towards NSD.

Second part I'm going with a true freshman on offense with Colin Thompson. He is literally the only true inline blocking TE on the team that could also catch, I think he is going to be important part of the offense. He might not get 50 catches and 700 yards, but he is going to be like a 6th OL and help the run game. On defense I'll go Mike Taylor. McCray moves to BUCK while Powell is out and I think Taylor steps up. He did good when he came in last year, so I could see him earning some solid playing time and impressing people.

  • My breakouts:

    Freshmen:

    1) Morrison, Pittman, Cox (just a feeling he comes in in Summer B and brings it), Fowler, Dunker. I would list Humphries, I just don't think he'll see the field unless we have an injury to 2 OT. Thompson, Taylor.

    Others:

Je. Jenkins, M. Taylor, Wilson, Driskel, Easley, Floyd, McCray, Ajagbe, Dunbar, Debose, Purifoy, Roberson, Nixon, Kitchens, Jacobs.

  • Part I:
I think we split with LSU for Pagano and Gilmore. I like Gilmore but I LOVE Pagano. The kid has called out Adams and RN so give me a kid with that type of swag and a chip on his shoulder anyday. I'm not concerned with recruiting on D because we can go so many ways to fill the class with solid talent. But the WR and OL board is becoming concerning even at this early stage. We are after Tunsil and Borwn but what's really left at OTs is we miss on both. I like Outlaw and Rod but they are more suited for OG imo. After Hump all our OT are upper classmen. WR is a guessing game atp but if we miss on Robinson and Coley I hope we take a guy like Mercer or give a strong look at Dominic Walker or Ryan Jenkins(Ga).

    Part II:
If McCray starts the season at Buck then I hope we kick Bostic to SLB and Taylor to Mike. IMO Floyd is going to make himself some money this year. The more time he gets at DT the better for both sides.
On offense, I go with Patton, James Wilson and the Hback position group. Patton has the talent to be a Chris Rainey or tDexter McCluster type of player in the slot,RB and ST. Wouldn't shock me to see him become All SEC as ATH/RS.
The WR will have a solid year but I don't see any getting over 600 yards and 5TD. IMO our Rec/TD leader will come from the TE/HBack spot.

I forgot about Patton. I agree with you I think he is going to have a great year! Everything about him has been positive this off season and I think he is going to earn a lot of playing time and have his own little niche in the offense

  • I'm gonna go with Larentee McCray as THE GUY on defense if he can stay healthy. During the Auburn game last year he took Powells spot while Ropo was injured. He was our best defensive player that day. He was everywhere. He seemed to play the role we all thought the "buck" would be. I remember him making plays in coverage, against the run, and causing pressure on the QB. I'm reluctant because he's been injured alot lately. If he stays healthy, he should have a huge year.

Also think Jaylen Watkins becomes our best corner. He's put on good size and is physical against the run. He was in position all year to make INTS's, he just wasn't quite comfortable enough to get his head on a swivel. In the spring game I saw him make a couple great plays, especially the jump ball with Jordan Reed where he got his head around quickly and made a play. I think he's alot more talented than many of us give him credit for. He's going to be great this year.

I want to say one of the freshmen DL's makes an impact, but I'll atleast wait until we hear "rumors" of one of them killin it in fall practice. Can't do that yet. I suspect Bullard is going to be a good freshmen and I don't really expect Fowler to be ready early in the year.

I expect our LB corp to be much better. Everything from Bostic and Jenkins being bigger, older, more experienced, and knowing the system, to them having a better DL in front of them, to having more depth with legit players like Taylor and hopefully Morrison. That is going to make a difference. I'd like to see McCray at Buck, Bostic and Jenkins at WLB/SAM, and Taylor in the middle.. Not all the time, but when the opposing offense calls for it.

Gotta think about offense and I'll post later

I've heard some stuff about a CB too. Haven't heard anything about a name, just someone that will be surprise and his name isn't one that is thrown around a lot. Kinda worried about who it is though.

  • As far as recruiting surprises go, I think in the end, we end up with Demarcus Walker. Maybe we come out on the opposite end of last yr's JHC fiasco, with Gilmore, as well. Whatever the case, I think the dline class will end up very well by NSD.

As far as the season surprises goes, I think we see Omar Hunter become a force in the conference. Well, I hope this turns out to be the case.

Offensively, I think the starting qb will be discovered before gm 1. I cant see the qb battle going into the season. There isnt enough time to prep 2 qbs in one week, especially with week 2 being an away conference gm. My money is on Brisset being the starter, but I think Driskel's tools have more upside.

I dont believe Pittman will be a difference maker this yr. It takes supreme talent to be that as a true freshman, in this conference. No knock against Pittman at all. But, offensively as a team, I cant find a justifiable reason to see anybody exploding this yr. Im just hoping for consistency, progression, and for the oline to stay healthy.

  • Xavier Nixon has put on weight and his dreads have reached his shoulders. I say he'll have a breakout year and I also would like to nominate him for goonhood.

If not he, I'm guessing Michael Taylor. He's impressive.

So who are we thinking we get to finish up the OL class? Hope its not Tunsil or bust cause we need atleast one more good OT prospect. I'm just not excited about our OL class thus far.

Logical choice would be Fennell but I heard awhile ago he had some pretty awful grades...no idea if that situation is the same

I love Outlaw and Johnson. I'm not nearly as high on Dillard.

If the low end of our class is Johnson, Neal, Bell, Ivie, Lane, Hawkins, and Staver... I'll take it. Dillard is the only one in our class that I didn't think was a take.
