Thoughts on UF hoops after watching them blast Wisconsin

  • Last night was my first chance to watch the hoops team this year.

Murphy has such nice touch shooting the basketball. It wasn't just baseline threes last night. He hit from several spots on the floor and I'm not sure he even touched the rim on any of his shots. Looks to be more of an inside presence this year too which we are going to need.

Rosario is a handful to defend, really quick first step. Also showed a nice shooting touch and a couple of nice passes. He looks much improved over last year to me.

Frazier has a sweet stroke. He may turn out to be a steal. With lots of freshman it takes a little while for them to settle down and find their stroke in the college game. Not this kid. Looks like a scorer and plays pretty hard on d. Like him.

Young didn't do a whole lot. Really doesn't have much of an offensive game although he has a nice touch around the hoop. Has poor hands which contributed to a lot of the turnovers on entry passes. He is draftable on size alone but looks to me like he is nowhere near ready for the offensive side of the NBA .

Love Yeguete. Great court awareness and instincts. Had forgotten how good a player this guy is. Looks to me like his offensive game has improved a lot over last year and he actually showed a nice stroke from the line last night. This guy is a helluva player and was just a steal from a recruiting standpoint.

Was impressed with Boynton at the point. Handled the ball fine and went long stetches without getting a shot and seemed fine with it. If he is gonna play in the NBA he has to be able to run the point so this is good experience for him.

Will be glad when Prather and Wilbekin get back. Team looks a little thin depth wise. If Young, Yaguete and Murphy stay healthy all year, could see this team making another run at the final four. If one of those three goes down, I think we have problems.

All in all, very impressed with a 20 point win over number 22.

  • Very impressed w/ this team. Players were unselfish last night, hitting the boards hard, and took smart shots. Team looked good against a well known defensive squad.

    BHAM GATOR

  • I don't know that I'd consider Frazier a steal. He was ranked pretty highly.

  • MF II was a kid who had Duke on him early and wasnt an easy win for UF recruiting, that said he had a less than spectacular last 1.5 yr on circuit, his ranking dropped and he went from a kid who could have been a top 30 national kid to a top 100 kid.....IMO he has played so far like a top 30 caliber HS prospect -- nice length, well built, rebounds well at SG/defends and we all know he has a sweet stroke

Yeguette is amazing how kid has improved every yr....kid always had the Worm mentality/game on defense ....unreal watching his offense come along , ability to grab a rebound/bring ball up court, and show a few moves in post....his future is bright no question + physically he has gotten more ripped each yr on campus

Murphy - same can be said, like WY has just taken his game up a notch every yr....we saw flashes of what he is capable of doing vs sUK in SEC tourney last yr....great to see him bigger, more versatile.....over summer Taurean Greene tweeted after a summer hoops session that Murphy was going to be a 1st Rd NBA pick.....looks like he was right

think Mike Ro was best when he is facilitating , kid has a feel for game / not sure why BD wouldnt try him more at PG -- maybe the turnovers are just too much to overcome to trust him w/ ball in his hands, not sure

depth, depth depth.....Cody I hope you come back!! clear we can benefit from having another 6 10" body to play 5-7 min and give out hard fouls, rebound a bit and let PY / Murph get a blow at 5 spot IMO

fingers crossed Prather and/or Scottie W come back looking like guys who have IMPROVED (similar to WY/Murphy) -- IF Prather can be a difference maker at the 3 spot w/ his ATHLETICISM team could take the next step IMO and move to front of plane come tourney time

  • Speaking of wilbekin any news on him yet...we need him. Boynton at two is his best spot and I think the team runs smoother with a true point. Boynton doesn't attack enough to me....we need drive and dish for our shooters...especially boynton...he is awesome at sneaking out and getting open looks. This team with wilbekin should be scary.

  • Love Frenchie. Lemme get that out of the way first. Favorite player on the squad.

I think a lot of people are sleeping on Young's offensive game. The guy can score with his back to the rim when the opportunity presents itself. He was really coming on strong last year, IMO, before he was hit with the injury bug. And knowing the kid's work ethic, I know he hit the gym hard during the offensive to improve his game. It was so frustrating watching all the poor entry passes from bad angles last night. We'll obviously see but I think PY will prove a lot of people wrong this year. Especially when Scottie returns.

  • Well we have all noticed improvement from Murph, Will and Pat. Regrettable that Scottie and Casey have not been on the court but I suspect they are better too.

They all should be better because Billy works them hard and they benefit from his coaching. I know everyone is raving about Murph and he did have a tremendous game but I am not surprised. The kid is 6-10, has been in the system for years and has good lineage
    he should be good!

Just goes to show how good our coaching staff is. If Scottie and Casey come back we probably are a legit top 10 team.

    Gatorhead

  • I think we are a legit top 10 team even without Casey and Scottie

    Jonas

  • I think the thing about Young that's a great sign is he seems to have his elevation back. That's huge. He's been better rebounding and scoring on hooks already because of it.

  • I want to see them kill all the TO issues and get a big win on the road, but how can you not be impressed?

I will miss the half-court threes with 15 seconds on the shot clock by you-know-who.

  • For this early in the season the team looks really good.

No doubt we will need the depth that Wilbekin and Prather provide as the season goes on.

Yeguete is something special. He has an obvious love for the game and plays with great effort.

Very very excited. The sky is the limit for this team. I'm picking them to win the SEC!

  • Peeked at the WI site just to see their reaction to the loss to the Gators. Bo said their objective was to try & shut Big Pat down before the game. They did a good job, but Pat did score & rebound. Pat however shut their big off completely-negating their biggest threat to us. Bo went on the say they just forgot about Murph who had a career night going 10/10 from the field. Bo also said Fla had multiple weapons to turn to, which is good to hear from a very good opposing HC at a top 20 program.
So I wouldn't say Pat is not good offensively yet. But I do agree he needs to work on softening up the hands to where he can hold onto it a bit better. Needs to step out about 10 or so feet & work on his shot a bit to keep the opponents honest when defending against him. He only gets better as the year progresses IMO. Have to get him fired up for every game!

Not having any size coming off the bench still worries me a good deal.

Pat should stay another year, that's just how I feel. It would help his game a ton... he's already progressed tremendously in 2 years and an off season. I think he could work his way into the lottery if he stayed and developed a 10 fter

I expect he will go in the lottery after this season. Staying works your way out of the lottery more often than works your way in.

We'll see... Everything I've read/heard has him projected mid-late first. I'm not saying he couldn't play himself into the lottery this season though.

Next years one and done class is downright nasty. He may fall further if he were to come back. Lets see what he looks like as the season progresses. I don't think we've seen all the improvements he's made just yet. He hasn't had alot of chances to show his offensive game to this point.

This. The class next year is absolutely loaded. Barring an injury this year or something, Young's losing money if he comes back, even if he has a much better senior season.

  • We'd be a Top 10 team next year if we had Walker and Hill + 3 random dudes. Just saying!

  • I hope Wisc doesnt go crashing and burning and finish w/ a sub .500 type record....they seem headed that way -- forget they lost do it all PG/SG Jordan Taylor to graduation....devastating to lose JR 2 yr starter - PG Josh Gasser to a torn ACL

their offense has ZERO cohesiveness....Dekker will be good in a few yrs but otherwise only guy they have who can even think about getting his own shot was #40 the big 6 10" kid

I think they play 4-5 SRs major minutes so they prob will pull it together and put up a decent B10 yr and help our RPI

Yep. If young does stay our line up would be
    Hill
    Frazier
    Prather
    Walker
    Young

That's a freaky atheltic line up....

Honestly completely forgot about him....him and prather are about the same except he is a better shooter. Then again we have will back too...does he move to center if young leaves or because of size do we put walker there....we are short on centers right now. Billy needs to get some size...we got a ton of guards right now.
