The Latest on Conference Realignment

  • From Pete Thamel of the NY Times. He has consistently been out ahead of this story, being the first to write about Syracuse and Pittsburgh moving to the ACC and the first with a lot of the twists and turns regarding Texas A&M to the SEC.

    - The commissioner of the PAC-12, Larry Scott, is working hard on bringing Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State into the league.
    - Significant obstacles remain to a deal, and it's not clear they will get there.
    - Even if Scott can reach a deal with the four schools, he still has to get approval from the other universities in the PAC-12, and several are opposed.
    - Texas had been talking to the ACC, but those talks appear over.
    - Missouri has some reservations about a move to the SEC, but may find that it doesn't have another choice.
    - The status of PAC-12 negotiations should play out over the next 7-10 days.

  • The ACC presidents voted over the weekend to expand the buyout to leave the conference to $20 million. That will be a reasonable deterrent for Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech and others.

  • Assuming they get the paperwork done and signed quickly, which might not be the case, particularly if someone is looking to leave.
