The Expert Picks: Florida vs. Tennessee

I think we need to see patron used a lot. Screens, tosses, the sweep. He has the speed to get to the outside on Tenn.

  • I don't know how anyone could be offended by any analyst picking A&M last week. They had a decent team last year with good athletes. They hired a new head coach who has been successfully every where he has been. And they were playing at home in their 1st SEC game with a passionate fan base fired up to cheer them to victory. Oh and they were playing a Fla team that has been mediocre the last few years with a new OC, A new QB making his 1st start on the road, same OL and same WR that have done nothing. I don't think they were crazy or stupid for picking A&M.

Tenn is fired up and is playing with a new found confidence. They got rid of a few team cancers and believe they can win. Plus they get a beat up Fla team at home at night with ESPN game day present. No one would be crazy for picking Tenn.

That being said I think Fla can win and I hope they do.

  • Offended? Hell I LOVE it when everyone picks against us. Makes it that much more fun when the Gators win!

  • Bruce Feldman also says UTenn has too much firepower on offense for Florida to handle. Just picked UT to win on the Tony Barnhart show.. Feldman thinks our injuries, specifically Jelani Jenkins, will hurt us. Says UT looks like an SEC team on offense and defense now..

They're sure getting alot of love, especially for only having beat a mid teir ACC team by 14 and an FBS school in Ga State. Guess we'll see.

We were the underdog last week and this week. The "experts" are picking against UF in these types of games (good teams, but not great teams like Bama/LSU) for the first time in years. I think UF is finally not getting the benefit of the doubt. That hasn't happened since Zooks third year. I'm fine with it, but we gotta prove them wrong. I want this game more than just about any game left. Not because its UTenn as much as because of this trashy group of players they have, Bray being tops on the list.

  • You know, I think what we've experienced this week is... Gators and Vols won't/don't play nice. I'm not sure we should either. What's wrong with some good natured hate?

I wasn't overly impressed with him at all in the little bit of time they actually played him the first two games. He was handled by an undersized Nc State center with no help. He seemed to get winded pretty quickly.

Now, Mo Couch is a different story. He's not playing like the five star juco he was billed as, but he's getting better, more productive, and can cause some problems. He is also well over 300 pounds but he's alot more agile and alot quicker than McCullers ever thought of being.

They play him at DE and NT.. He moves inside when they're in their nickel, which they've lined up in the Vast majorty of their defensive snaps thus far, like most Saban desciples defenses do. I wouldn't worry too much about McCullers.. Our OL is pretty damn athletic and move their feet pretty well. That should be a good thing against their less athletic DL. IF they come with only three down, we should be able to get to the second level on alot of our running plays.

Their OLB's in Jaques Smith and Curt Maggit, are the ones who get the most pressure on the QB. They've been alot more aggresive thus far under Sal. That leaves plenty of chances to exploit them because they don't have the system down pat yet. Even if they did, they dont have that overwhelming defensive talent that Bama/UGA have in their 3-4 defense. UT's corners are very average.

I hear you loud and clear but he occupies guys for other DTs to do the damage. Not about McCuller per se but what he allows the rest of the line to do. I hope you're right.

Again, he was NOT being double teamed though.. Nose tackles that size are only effective if they MUST be doubled.. From what I've seen, he stays too high with his pad level and isn't as strong as you would think.. Guess we'll find out.

I understand a Nose Tackle isn't supposed to be making plays, but allowing others to make plays. He is just another DL out there when guys can handle him man to man. Hopefully Harrison keeps him off the line by himself. Our Zone blocking scheme helps in this case.

Yep.. Listen to 3HL on 104.5 everyday.. Clay says UT wins by 35.. Everyone is really buying into UT right now. If we do beat them, this will break their hearts more than it has in a long long time. This seriously is their Super bowl. Their players, fans, coaches, and all the experts think they win by alot. Barnhart, Derrick Rackley, Bob NEal all picked UT on "talking football."

ITs US aginst the world. We need to put our big boy pants on and take care of business. We have better athletes and better depth than them at every position except WR. If they win, it will be because we couldn't stop Bray and those WR's..

    swampchomp615

  • I'm really glad that we seem to be the consensus underdogs going into this game, I think that gives our boys a decided psychological advantage over the Vols biggrin

But, what is even better is that not a single one of them can prove why or justify a UT win. WHY? because there is absolutely nothing to support it.

This isn't really true. UT has alot more experience and depth. They have Patterson and a healthy Hunter. They have an entire OL returning, and they have three new talented Juco DL's who are starting for them that didn't start last year. Plus Maggit and Johnson aren't true freshmen playing in their first SEC game this year.

The reason we blew them up last year was their young freshmen LB's trying to cover Rainey on those swing routes. He ate them alive on those and the screen pass. They were not an attacking defense last year, they are this year. They are CERTAINLY better than they were last year and its not that close.

Now, we have more depth and experience too. We have a better front seven, better/older DB's, and a better understanding of our defensive scheme. However, we're missing Jelani, who actually dropped three INTS last year. He is a big loss in this game. We also don't have that outside speed that killed their thin/young defense last year. We are now an inside team with a hurt RB who happens to be our only playmaker right now. I do think we're better at QB/OL/TE but we're young and their success is based on how we run the ball.

This game is more evenly matched than its been in a while. Who wins.. Our defense and running game, or their high powered offense with chance taking, but attacking defense? We MUST exploit them with the passing game when they crowd the box and blitz, which they will do all game long. Can we do that with our WR's? Who knows.

Excellent analysis. MSU alum here. The swamp on my end comes from the MS delta swamp. Anyway........

I was at this game last year and UFs speed advantage was striking. So much so that I left in the second quarter to get in the air conditioning and beer.

Agree, this game boils down to your stud RB and D backfield. If you can take away hunter or Patterson and make em try to run, I like your chances.

I mean, I'll give you my reason for picking Tennessee 27-20.

    1) Not sold on Gillislee's health or the backups behind him. If he's limited, Florida's ability to control the clock and play a grind-it-out game goes down significantly. That means Tennessee's offense will be on the field more.

    2) Despite how good Florida's secondary is, I expect at least a handful of explosive plays from the Tennessee passing game. I expect the Vols will be able to come up with at least one or two big plays in the passing game that go for touchdowns. When they happen will be a big key. Do they come early to put the Vols ahead? If so, that's a bit of a bigger problem for Florida.

    3) I think Tennessee's defense is significantly improved, especially the linebacking corps. I understand there are injury concerns, but I still feel like the linebackers will be able to slow Florida down enough to keep the Gators from going on the extended scoring drives we've seen the last two weeks.

    45 - 10!?!

Wow, I hope that prediction (along with all of the Tennessee players trash talk) gets back to the team.

Being a "grind it out" football team, as Muschamp calls us, the lack of respect from the media can only help. I get the same vibe from this years team as I did from the '06 title team. I don't see us making a run at the NC like that team, but the lack of respect from the media and opposing teams may give us the added motivation we need to win some games we shouldn't.

    Go Gators! Crush the Vols!

  • Just don't get the Tenn hype at all. I understand being careful picking the gators...but Tenn has been Worse than us the last two years. We win an sec game on the road...they beat a bottom tier Acc team. I'm kind of confused where this false expectation is coming from.
