Spring football observations

The Florida Gators held their first practice of the spring in pads Saturday afternoon. Here are a few observations about the brisk, two-hour practice session.

  • Brady Ackerman says Dunbar was in Weis' doghouse. Any insight?

I love the majority of the pieces on our DL. Just wish we had more quality depth.

  • Less Burton more Mack Brown please.

I know I'll catch a lot of flack for this, but I don't see Burton ever being a big contributor against quality opponents. Against the better competition in our conference, they all have guys that are bigger than Trey at LB and who can run with him. Not to mention the kid is just not that physical when it comes to running the ball. On numerous occasions I've watched him try to avoid contact when he could have lowered his head for extra yardage. He's a tweener type of player, and I doubt he will ever grow into a true H-Back at UF. That's JMO.

I hope that one of our QB's separates themselves as we go from the other. I really really don't want to see a 2 QB offense. There's no rhythm and flow with a 2 QB offense.

Defense sounds like it's playing well, but I want to see LB's that play with the big boys, and DL that can hold and shed a block. Our front 7 plays extremely well against the patsy's but I want to see them step up and do it for 4 Qtrs against the strength of the conference. Of course that will take an offense that's competent, something we haven't seen at UF in 2 years.

  • I have wondered for two years what would happen with Trey if they used him a bit differently. We've seen him run the 2-yard route incessantly and we've seen him come in at quarterback where there is no mystery that he's going to run the ball. I was happy to see him getting the ball in some different situations today and maybe that will translate into different situations in games in the fall. The way he's been used the last two years certainly hasn't produced very much.

  • Exactly. IMO the ONLY way he will be successful is getting the ball in space. Whether that be 15 yds down the field or 3 yds, I don't care. He doesn't do very well in crowded areas because he has a bigger body, but he's a finesse type of player. Trey is just a tweener, like I said. I'm not opposed to him catching passes, but I really don't like him at Tailback. I don't think he displays the characteristics of a quality tailback.

  • We should have a second gallery coming from Steve Johnson but no, we don't have video.

  • I would like to see Trey at strong safety. He could be a John Lynch type missle back there at 220lbs.

    Yeah, let's bench Elam.

  • Florida doesn't play a strong safety/weak safety. It's a 2-safety system where one plays the left side and the other plays the right. Trey would fit in fine in that system. I believe that his future is probably on defense a la Nolan Cromwell, another former option QB with a very high football IQ.

  • They say that, but last year Elam played in the box playing a role of a Strong Safety the majority of the time. There was a few times where Elam played deep, but it wasn't very often.

  • When Elam is in the box they're in nickel according to what Dan Quinn tells me.

Yeah. I would venture to say that UF spent the majority of the time last year in the Nickel. Hell, against teams like Bama and LSU who are run heavy teams we played a lot of Nickel. I could have sworn last year it was our base defense. Elam plays the run so well though, so I can understand why. Bad thing about having Elam in the box all the time is, you have to have another safety back deep that can cover a lot of space, and Evans has to step it up and play really consistent.

My thoughts exactly. I think nickel was our base, and the thoughts on Elam and Evans are spot on IMO. I also don't see the potential for Burton at TB. He's not physical enough. But he does do nice things in the open field and has a knack for bouncing it outside at the second level. He needs to be trained exclusively as a WR IMO, and to allow Joyer and another to man the FB/H-back position.

  • Burton was impressive running routes longer than three yards. I've felt for the past two years that he was terribly mis-used in the passing game. The one-handed catch he made on that seam route was very impressive.

Coach Weis' favorite! That and the triple smash route to the same depth on the same side :-)

  • For a guy who made his reputation on innovative offense, Charlie Weis went totally brain dead in 2011.

That's why I think our one missing piece on defense is a Reggie Nelson type safety. A guy who can erase the back end.

Our defensive scheme changed alot as the year went on. Once Elam started playing almost exclusively in the box, we got alot better pressure and we were alot better against the run. Elam is in his element down in the box. He's essentially another LB with great coverage skills in our nickel packages. I imagine we'll see a ton of nickel again this year. Hopefully Pop or Evans can continue to have better range on the back end. Pop showed some ball skills in the FSU and bowl game. He could be the guy. Roberson would be an amazing Free safety imo.

  • Burton has the measurements to make a mean safety but we really have no idea, has anyone seen him attempt to make a tackle?

Right again. But Evans worries me. I'm hoping he's made strides and comes out and owns the position, but my gut tells me it's someone else, and Pop is a good candidate.

We have guys on defense now that have been tackling their entire lives that are no good at it. The last thing I want to do is take an offensive skill guy, and move him to safety in the SEC.
