SEC linebacker commits by state from 2006-10

  • Here's some research to shape your view of the northern linebacker debate. My takeaway is that SEC schools really just don't recruit many northern linebackers. Only 15 commits out of 173 came from what could be considered non-SEC, northern states. Of those 15, 12 were from Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland, which I would probably consider southern states.

The remaining three were from Indiana (Andrew East - Vanderbilt), Iowa (Dorian Davis - Tennessee) and Pennsylvania (Brendan Beal). So, while it may be accurate to say not many northern linebackers have contributed in the SEC lately, it's also worth mentioning that there has been an extremely limited sample size.

Here's the breakdown of SEC linebacker commits from 2006-10 by state:

    35 - Georgia
    27 - Alabama
    26 - Florida
    18 - Mississippi
    12 - Tennessee
    10 - Louisiana
    8 - Texas
    5 - Arkansas
    5 - Kentucky
    5 - North Carolina
    5 - Virginia
    5 - South Carolina
    3 - California
    2 - Oklahoma
    2 - Maryland
    1 - Pennsylvania
    1 - Arizona
    1 - Indiana
    1 - Iowa
    1 - Kansas

And here is the breakdown by team, with the individual names of the commits from the "northern" states I listed above.

  • TG, while I don't think this has anything to do with the Analzone arguement, that is damn impressive. How long did that take you? Is there any other reporter on any site who would do this?
    Seriously, wow. Thanks

Not so much supporting that SEC teams shouldn't recruit linebackers from up north ... just that they typically don't.

    Hour, hour and a half.

Look, I view my job as providing you guys with whatever information I can. I'm here to give you guys what you want to know. Other reporters get bugged by people asking them something they could probably Google pretty easily. Not me, I'm getting paid for the convenience I provide. You shouldn't have to look stuff up, that's what I'm here for. Now, I certainly appreciate it when y'all do, but I'll never get annoyed by looking something up to provide info for you guys.

And I'm big on facts, so if I can provide more shape to a debate by listing facts, I'll always do that. Now time for a beer!

Because the ones that they have recruited to come down here have never been able to hang with the boys from dixie

So reverse this then. How many southern kids go north to play ball or are PSU, Mich, and OSU typically loaded with northern kids? Oops...just gave TG another assignment.

Understand this. My point was how many kids from the south turn down schools from the north to say closer to home and play in the SEC? That was kinda my point about kids growing up in the north. I was wondering if we'd see similar analysis when looking at the northern schools.

You did a boss job with your digging T.G . and I'm not trying to create more research for you, but Uffeesh has a point if we use those stats as fact for the arguement it would be assuming all the top linebackers from above the M.D. chose an SEC school. Best gauge IMO is the see where the starting Linebackers that are in the NFL are from.
