Rainey Responds to Meyer Criticism

Says he heard the story of Harvin attacking Gonzales from other players, coaches were scared of players, etc.

I know this topic is getting kind of old, but Rainey's always a good interview.

  • Wow, I'm glad Chris was honest about the situation after some players were denying it. I found it interesting at the end when he said the coaches were scared of some players. All in all I'm glad Muschamp is the coach at UF now and is building UF the right way.

    secrocks2000

  • Interesting. Rainey, pretty much, coroborated everything in that article in his own words. Its nice to have further justification for thinking Meyer is a scum bag that, although we won, drove our program straight into the ground.
That said, I love Mushcamp and I have never been more excited about building our program.

  • based upon Chris's relationship with Meyer, or perceived relationship, I am somewhat surprised by his words

The truth will set you free. I am not at all surprised by the article. Meyer looks like a whimp. I am glad players are speaking out.

  • Friendly OSU fan here. I just wanna know why most Florida fans hate Urban? Is there more behind just him leaving? He did win you guys two national championships. Hell, I hope he can at least win us one.

I don't hate him. I think he took an easy way out......but being down now is well worth 2 NC's. I think a lot of us are just miffed he retired in '09, changed his mind, lead us to a bad season, then quit again for "health" and "family" reasons....then goes back to coaching a year later. I find it more humorous/ironic than actual hatred.

No hate here. He bitched out though, lied about the severity of his health issues, and left the program in worse shape than he took over.

Him leaving has a lot to do with it. A lot of Gator fans don't like the way he left. They don't like way the last season went and how he kind of checked out. Then he retired due to health issues and to spend time with his family but comes back to OSU a year later. That rubs a lot of folks the wrong way. They see it as disingenuous.

Personally I like the guy. I appreciate what he did for UF, winning 2 National Championships. I listened to Urban last year as an analyst and thought he was one of the most intelligent analysts I've ever heard. His football acumen is as good as anyone I've ever heard discuss the game.

One thing that rubbed me entirely the wrong way though was in his last year at UF, with Addazio as OC our offense was absolutely horrid at times. Those guys (Meyer and Addazio both) stood up there at the mic and insulted our intelligence by telling us we were not seeing the crap offense that we were most certainly seeing. I hope we never have another coach that insults our intelligence like that. It was a low point for Meyer but then IMO he had already checked out and was just going through the motions.

I think Urban will do a great job at OSU. He did at UF and really what killed him more than anything was a) staff turnover and b) great players leaving early for the NFL. Urban puts so much into the job that he is IMO prone to burnout. If he can get the type of speed at OSU that he did at UF - lookout big 10!!!

    Amen and +1!

Nothing worse than the Daz telling us Mike Pouncey "graded out as champion" after his 3rd week in a row of bowling his snaps to Brantley. Blew my mind how someone didn't come in for him after 3 weeks! Or how Jordan Reed didn't get more time in as QB in that spread option system. I know he had problems with learning the plays but the guy made first downs happen. I know our record was worse last year but 2010 was harder on the eyes...

  • A quick question for you guys, sorry to get offtopic. Did you guys have alot of trouble keeping players healthy? It seems that Urbans practices are so intense, and everything is about competing. With that said, the players are going hard out there hitting wise, and weve had some guys get banged up just in spring ball. Did this happen alot at Florida? Thanks guys..

Not really, there were some fragile guys that were just prone to injuries but other that I don't remember players getting hurt often.

Unless you are an insider enough to go to practice you know nothing about how intense they are or are not. One thing you need to understand about Meyer is that he is a liar. He keeps everything from everyone including fans and the press that he can.

Now all football coaches are less than truthful to the press and fans. Meyer is just at the far end of the spectrum away from truth. So if you don't see it with your own eyes do not necessarily believe anything you hear.

Actually, yes. That's about the ONLY complaint I ever had about Marotti. It seemed like UF always had kids injured in the Spring or early in the Spring. Mainly because Marotti trains for speed, and sometimes that doesn't fit well with grueling practices like Meyer has. JMO, but yes, a S&C coach can have a big impact on the amount of injuries.

All were blatant lies. Good riddance to Addazio.

Meyer won us two NC's or UF won meyer two NC's? I see it as the latter. The way he sold UF out to Steffon Digss is unforgivable.

Someone on here said 2010 was tuff on the eyes. I wanted to stick forks in my eyes in 2009 and 2010. Watching Meyer w/o tebow and that joke of an OC Adazzio was the worst I have ever seen the Gators play ball. Ever.

He wimped out. He came in at the perfect opportunity when Bama, FSU, and Miami were all a mess. When it started to look like Bama and FSU got their act together he got sick and quit. Maybe it was a coincidence, but thats a awfully big coincidence for me to swallow.

  • As to posts above, it is not fair to say Meyer was a scum bag. Meyer was a great football coach. He had flaws. No flaws as serious as screwing co-eds on the schools dime, or hiring his hoes to work for him. No serious recruiting stuff like the lame kitten. Etc, etc. Also he did not drive the program in the ground. That is just silly. He left it better than he found it, which is more than you can say for a lot of coaches.

Completely agree with this. I thought I was the only one that noticed the spring injuries when Marotti took over. All I ever saw on Gator boards was praise for Marotti, and it seemed like the injuries lessened with time, but Marotti's first couple of years with UF featured A LOT of spring injuries, and they were all pretty similar injuries to boot, which means it's the training and not the player.
