Part I: Bowl system or a playoff? (READ FIRST ... then answer)

  • I don't see why you make an explanation using the NFL. It's setup completely different, and takes more than just 4 teams, which is the proposal in CFB. BTW, a team gets more than 1 week to prepare for the NFL, if you want to make that reference. You cannot relate the NFL playoff system at all to CFB, for a number of reasons I won't go into because this is about a CFB playoff system that doesn't relate to the NFL.

I can use the word "arguably" because this is a debate. This is a question you have proposed, is it not?

I made all those points about UO/AU and UF/OU in my post, which can be used for positives for both systems, apparently.

  • Oh, and stop name dropping NFL scouts, etc. I talk to 3 of them each week on the golf course that work for a NFL team. One who is director of player personnel, one who's the associate director of player personnel, and the last one is a director of college scouting.

They all have talked to me about the college game and what they think of a playoff system v the current system, and they're split. Just like it will always be with fans.

  • I am not name dropping, just making mention of what someone told me. I'm fortunate because of the job that I do that I make friends with them. If I were name dropping I would use their names but that would be an intrusion on their privacy. I simply mentioned that pro scouts I know don't think Auburn could have beaten Oregon with a week to prepare.

This is an interesting debate. Don't get chippy just because someone disagrees with you.

  • Ive been saying this for years:

A true playoff will kill college football. College football will never be the NFL, and its not supposed to be anything like it. I could agree with a form of a +1 system. Im actually all for that.

What do the playoffs really prove in the NFL? That the best team always wins? Thats not always the case neither.

The sport of football is, always has been, and 4ever will be a sport in which any team can win on any given sat/sun.

The only true playoffs in sports are in the NBA, MLB, and the NHL. The best team is the team that wins a series against several teams. Its not determined by one gm.

Can you guys imagine the decline of rivalry week, due to teams sitting players for the playoffs? I dont ever wanna see that.

I just hate all the fuss about no one being able to determine who the true #1 is, when the sport of football is a one game playoff every week. Thays how Ive always viewed it.

  • I say leave it as it is. I don't know the answer, but how many times have the number 1 and two teams met in the Championship? NFL, Div 1AA, II,III? How many times have two number one seeds met in the NCAA basketball, baseball. I will bet less than 10% of the time. So, as it is now a one vs. two is every year. JMHO.

Bull crap. Arguably the top 3 teams in the country were in the West.

Bama deserved to be in the NCG, and they probably beat LSU earlier in the year if Saban doesn't have mental breakdowns, plays field position, and stops kicking long FG's when he doesn't have a kicker that can kick those.

If you have a playoff, I can almost guarantee you the top 2 teams don't make it. Whether it be because a key player gets an injury when the teams should be off, etc. Plus, another reason I don't like it is because that month off gives teams a chance to get healthy, after being beat up all season in conference play.

#1- if you don't win your conference you do not deserve to be placed by the media in the MNC game

#2- maybe bammer was the best team but unless you have a playoff then LSU got screwed for going on to win their conference after beating bammer on the field of play-all you can do is say bammer would have won if Saan doesn't have a mental breakdown-what a pile of hogwash-coaches and players not making the right calls and plays is what makes or breaks you as a champion-bammer was given a mulligan

#3- your almost guarantee is a pile of mierda- the only thing you can guarantee is that the best team on the field would win the playoff games and advance to the Championship game-injuries and bad calls are part of the game

  • You've got it all wrong. It's a playoff system that rewards mediocrity. My Giants finished 9-7 in the regular season. That's like going, say 7-5, in college football. Did they deserve a chance to even play for a championship? NO. Same in college basketball where all you have to do is finish .500 in your league in a major conference and you're eligible to play in the championship tournament. And in terms of a "beauty contest," that's ridiculous. A 12 or 13-game regular season scheudle is hardly a "beauty contest." Those who say college football isn't decided on the field are missing the point. Of course it's decided on the field, from September through early December. In the end, should there be a better way to finish the season, sure. But the sports where the regular season doesn't mean anything (ask the Packers about their great regular season) or is simply an exercise for seeding (Duke beat Carolina in Chapel Hill, who cares?), with the hoped-for payoff at the end (March Madness was pitiful last year) don't always work out either.

  • No I don't-the Giants won within the system that the NFL uses-they were the best team on the firld at the end of things

it is a shallow argueemtnt that says the best team didn't win- the best team won on the filed of play when the game was played-period

this liberal feel goodism bullchit is just that-you have to play and win the games to be the champion

  • I have always wanted a playoff, but now I'm not so sure. The BCS has gotten it right and the current system is cool because it is so unlike any other. Every game matters and that is just cool. Yes, it sucks when your team (UF) loses 1 or 2 and just misses, but that's why it is SO FREAKING AWESOME the years we have won it all, because it is so tough to do. After watching the NYG win the superbowl again after an average season, it made me 2nd guess my original thoughts of wanting a playoff. I would hate to see each Saturday not matter as much because these are a bunch of 18-22 yo kids who are difficult enough to motivate each week. With a playoff, I could easily see them say "no big deal, we can lose this and still make the playoffs". That would suck. Also, once we get into the discussion of how a playoff system would work (4 or 8 teams), there is always gonna be the 5th or 9th team whining about the system and how they deserved to be in.

That's not to say I'm against a playoff, but I am torn at this point and can see the pros and cons of both.

  • I like the bowl system with the elimination of about 10 bowls. Make teams have a least a 7 win record to qualify. Why do I not like a playoff - as a person that travels from Texas to all the Gator games, Air fares at Christmas (especially to Fl) are a killer, car rentals are brutal, and getting the tickets to the fans with only a week are a logistic nightmare. We will end up like the superbowl, very little fan enthusiasm at the game as the only people who will be there are the corporate sponsors or those who scalped their tickets to others. I love CFB not the NFL. NFL is something to watch Tim, Percy, the Pouncey's, Joe, Riley, etc after they leave.

  • To my earlier contention about the corruption in the bowl system ... and I do not believe that this is the only corrupt bowl or bowl official, just the one that got caught.
