No support in SEC for nine-game football schedule?

  • That's what senior writer for The Daily Gamecock Isabelle Khurshudyan reports South Carolina president Harris Pastides is saying.

Unless they're planning to go to 16 teams, there needs to be 9.

Are they going to let the Big 10 man up and not the SEC?

  • that's a damn shame if so.

going through stretches of over 10 years before facing an opponent in the West is ridiculous, especially when you think of what was once a very real rivalry with a team like Auburn.

  • Honestly I'll just be happy with them finding an actual set schedule so UGA can't continue not having to play Bama while they're dominant....

Man Up? With teams like Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern etc. compared to USCe, LSU, Vandy, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, etc? We man up 5 times as much as they do, in every conference game. I don't want a 9 game SEC schedule, because we could end up beating each other up so bad that it keeps us from the NC game. That would be stupid, because we are the best and toughest conference by a long, long, long way. That's not debatable.

  • If we stay at 8 games, I say do like basketball and get rid of the divisions. Just keep one rivalry game for each team that gets played every year like fla-ga, aub-ala, etc. Then just take the two best conference records and those two play for the conference title (use tiebreakers too obviously). Still having divisions and maintaining an 8 game schedule just leads to playing teams in the other division too infrequently.

  • The folks who will ultimately make this decision reside in New York and Bristol, Conn. The heads of CBS and ESPN write the checks and ultimately dictate football policy such as schedules, and if they want nine games, the SEC will go to nine games. TV money is paramount to the survival of every athletic program, even the wealthy ones, as attendance continues to drop, booster donations drop, etc. So it's nice for administrators to say this, but in my opinion, it doesn't mean much.

  • personally-I think if they go to 16 teams they have to go to a 10 game schedule to make it work

    And that's a first down!

  • No thanks to 9 games. I don't want to lose the budding rivalry we are developing with Sister Cletus School for the Blind.

I tend to agree. If we stick with 14 teams and an 8-game schedule, then we need to petition to the NCAA to ditch the two-division rule. Each team could have 3 permanent opponents and then rotate 5 of the remaining 10 teams = 8 game schedule.

This would mean that all teams would play all other teams at least twice every four years. Top two overall teams play in Atlanta. Just be sure to have a solid tiebreaker system in place.

  • My opinion... Add two teams. Move to 4 divisions of 4. Add semifinal games. Add 2 more SEC games for 10 total. And instead of a pure rotation, slate matchups based on previous year standings (e.g., #1 Bama has to play #2 UGA). This would pack stadiums and sell lots of tv. Ideally, while I am dreamig, get rid of the perm rival (which is continually an advantage for many in the league over others). Also, I think it would be ok not to have any divisions provided there were enough games and that schedules were made on a competive basis. Then we could take the top 4 teams in an SEC playoff.

10 conference games and then you have to win 2 playoff games to win the conference? Sounds exciting, but it would be crazy difficult to run that gauntlet and make the NC game. Plus you can kiss the FSU game goodbye in that scenario.

No doubt it would be difficult.

If we were to stay at 14 teams, then I'd get rid of the divisions and take the top two forthe champ game (making sure the scheduled played was as competively balanced as possible -- no UGA playing mostly bad teams).
