Attended the game today, and here are some QB observations:
-The QB play, as you all saw, was spotty at best. As I looked back at previous games I realized it just hasn't been that good period. Hot and cold is a nice way of putting it. The OL could do better. The WRs get open more than I thought, but they don't know how to extend routes well. So the bad plays aren't all on the QB. But the fact is, UF is getting good plays off and off at best from that position. Driskel still lacks a great awareness of when the rush is coming. Still has to get much better at that. From my view, it didn't look as though he sees the whole field well quite honestly. Also, there were several times when he simply threw to the wrong man. Perfect example -- at one point in either the 2nd or 3rd quarter, the pocket collapsed, so he ran straight ahead and threw to a well-covered receiver for a 5 yard gain. Unfortunately for UF it was 3rd and 10. Gave the play not chance whatsoever to achieve its purpose. I don't believe you all have seen a great improvement from him during the course of the season. Doesn't get sacked as much. That's plus. But is he reading defenses better? Does he go through progressions better? Doesn't look like it. The coaches would say I'm full of it. They have to say that. But my eyes and your eyes are probably seeing the same thing. Now, that said, he's the guy. Has to be. Huge upside if/when things really start to click. The real question is this: What kind of progression from Jeff will there from now to 2013? He has a long way to go. That's the harsh truth. Being able to make plays with your feet now and then is nice. But can he be a consistent threat in the passing game? Can he be a guy that will be able to attack a defense? We don't know yet. We just don't. You may says, 'well, he's just a soph.' And that's true. But what's also true is that he hasn't done a whole lot in the passing game at this point.
My gut tells me UF's OL will be MUCH better next year. And I also believe the WRs will be better as well. I think that's when we'll truly see what kind of QB this guy is. Tough kid. Great runner. Great arm. Time will tell if he becomes a great QB.
