Looking back...

  • Anyone surprised with the hire of Muschamp? Foley went out on a limb and got his man. This at the time seemed like a high risk, if you were Foley could you have pulled this hire off?

I am very happy Foley has a eye for talent and a sack to take the chance of hiring his guy not always the fans choice.

    BOOM WE TRUST.

  • As far as hiring a D-Coordinator as a HC this was a home run hire. He was the HC in waiting at Texas.

It depends on if you expected to hire and already proven HC. If you did then you were likely disappointed.

  • Well, the previous time he hired a defense oriented guy without head coaching experience, it didn't go all that well; so there's that.

I was sold on Muschamp from his introductory press conference as soon as I heard that drawl and his rhetoric about a blue collar football team; but I also don't presume to have what it takes to be AD at Florida lol.

It was definitely surprising and a a high-risk, high-reward decision by Foley. It's hard to say how much of a gamble it actually was though without being privy to all of the info Foley had during the process.

  • I have a friend -- yes I have friends -- that is a big UT coach and he told me at the time, if you are looking for a coordinator who is ready to take over a program you couldn't do better than Boom. I believed him. He was right

  • Brilliant, and I think Boom could have a heck of a run here. Heck, he might go old school and stay for 20 years!

I doubted at first but after that presser I was hooked.

  • Do you guys think Muschamp would leave UF for Texas once Mack is gone? One of the only jobs out there that would be considered better than UF is Texas, but I still don't see Muschamp wanting to leave. Interested to hear your guys' thoughts though...

Fair enough question, but I don't think so at all. He grew up in Gainesville and wanted to be a walkon at UF but a meeting fell through so he ended up at UGA. He has ties to UF and the SEC. I don't see any reason why he'd leave to go to Texas.

  • I didn't want Muschamp at first, i wanted Haurbaugh or Chris Petersen which both were obviously not candidates.

Muschamp had a great year, and the program looks to be in good hands BUT it is only year 2 and i will need to see a few more season before i compare Muschamp on the level of Spurrier or Urban Meyer.

Ive been impressed with the coaching job we've done on defense, the offense leaves a lot to be said but to be fair we've had injuries, a new OC and a new QB.

We'll see how this team responds next year and when some guys on defense leave.

So far the hire has been a good one, but we'll see how Muschamp does next year and in the following years.

I was ok with Boom as a hire but did not see it as a home run. Agree with CLF4L that we need to see we need to give it another couple of years but more to see how his recruits develop.

Two concerns I have going forward. One is controlling his "passion" when a call does not go his way or a player makes a mistake; I will leave it for Foley to continue to work with Muschamp on this; he does seem a bit more in control this year. I would hate to see us lose a good coach because he grabbed the wrong player at the wrong time.

Secondly, as a fan I want more access and less coach speak when we get it. I know this is up to Muschamp and there is less complaining this year than last because or our record and we have become use to it.

  • I wanted Stoops from Oklahoma. Hindsight is twenty twenty. Fantastic job by Foley.

Absolutely not. You don't leave a Top 3 job for another one, unless you are an alum. That, plus we play in the SEC and Champ wants to be in the SEC. Nobody will steal him, and I doubt anybody even tries so they won't get embarassed when he says NO. Foley would do everything to keep him as well, and could he have a better boss or surroundings? NO!!

I got you and I understand, but history shows the elite coaches go BIG in year 2 and we are 11-1 (as good as we ever were with Meyr or Spurrier) in year 2, with a first year OC and QB. That is an insanely good job. Look at how our team has developed too, I'm telling you guys we have a GREAT one!! I would not trade Muschamp for Nick Saban right now, because I think BOOM is a younger, more creative version, and we got him!!!!

  • As a matter of fact, our loss this year is better than the losses Meyer had in each of our NC runs (unranked Ole Miss and AU). Food for thought.

I also don't remember ever having the intestinal fortitude to be down on the road and then just OWN the 4th Qtr. We've done that more than once this year!

I agree with you here. I wish that FSU was in the same position as you guys money and conference wise so we didn't have to hear head coaching rumors every December, but it is what it is. Muschamp has definitely changed the complexion of your team and I'm hoping we will learn to be more physical and less finesse after that loss.
