Jimbo calls UF "the little team down the road"

  • TDGATOR said...

How exactly does Jimbo have FSU headed in the right direction? He is the offensive coordinator and play caller that mismanaged the clock at the end of the Miami game. His hands weren't that tied by Bowden. When the Noles start putting a worthy project on the field and are actually relevant in college football please let me know. Jimbo has as much experience as Ron Zook did as a head coach and we know how that turned out. Please go check out the LSU offense under Jimbo. LSU won with a tremendous defense and a slightly above average offense. See if he puts a quality product on the field before you drink to much of the Jimbo kool-aid.

That's actually not true. The first SEC Championship at LSU under Saban was won mostly on the backs of the offense. The defense ranked near the bottom of the league. The defense certainly became dominant, but it was not at the outset.

  • We rushed for 311 yards last year. So the Noles has their defense returning, FSU's defense is undersized and so is their offensive line.

No one on FSU's offensive line could start at Florida, know none of your interior DL could either.

This isn't sour grapes. FSU went 4-4 in the ACC last season, 6-6 overall. The sorry ACC, the two top teams in the ACC in 2009 the two that played in the conference championship game were beat by two middle of the pack teams in the SEC last year, Georgia and South Carolina.

That puts FSU down around the level of Mississippi State and just above Vanderbilt.

And now FSU is a contender because they have a new coach. All FSU has right now is hollow expectations cause that new coach could only score 10 points on the Gators last year..

The talent simply isn't there, FSU went 4-5 with Ponder. I mean it's a good thing FSU didn't play UCF last year because they lost to Miami, South Florida and the Gators.

FSU stank last year. El Stinko! So Bobby B moves on and now there's nothing but optimism?

  • Let's not forget that Jimbo almost lost to Jax St last year (should have lost). Meyer has never ever come even close to losing to a team as bad as Jax St. That is a coaching issue, not a talent issue. Jimbo is a poor man's version of Zook. Good luck with that.

  • If I remember correctly, Jimbo wasn't the head coach last year...

I also remember Nick Saban losing to UAB, but that ended up okay for LSU...

As for Zook, Florida fans should be appreciative that he recruited the majority of two national championship teams (yes, he signed a ton of players on the '96 squad). Urban should also be grateful that a foundation was laid for him when he arrived. If he'd inherited what Zook did when Spurrier left, he'd have been gone the three years too...

  • Zooker inherited a team with 21 players who made it to the NFL.

  • I can somewhat understand FSU fan's optimism - after all, it has been Weekend at Bernie's up there for a good while. However, this head coach in training/waiting concept should temper the usual optimism rational fans have when there is a regime change. The new boss is the same as the old boss. This guy has been the de facto head coach for the last few years, has recruited his own players, has played his own schemes, and has looked mediocre in doing so - especially against a Meyer coached team. Seems like whistling past the graveyard to me.

And the rest of the roster was full of Jonathan Marvins and other guys who had offers from Furman and Florida...

  • So Urban inherited all of Zooker's recuits.....does tht mean Jimbo's wonderful offense when he was Bobby's OC didn't use any of Bobby, Mickey and Amato's wondrerful; recuits?

  • Let me ask you this? How many first round draft picks did Ron Zook have in his three years at Florida? 1? 2? 4? 6? 7?... ZERO! Nada. Zilch. And if I'm not mistaken Ben Troupe was the only 2nd round pick. Even Spurrier admitted the cupboard was bare.

How many did LSU, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee have during that stretch? Helluva lot more than one.

  • In the 2003 Draft, Rex Grossman was a first round draft pick; Taylor Jacobs was a second round draft pick; Todd Johnson and Ian Scott were fourth rounders; Aaron Walker and Tron LaFavor were fifth rounders; Mike Nattiel was a sixth rounders a sixth rounder and Clint Mitchell was a seventh rounder. In 2004, Ben Troupe and Keiwan Ratliff were second rounders; Max Starks (two Super Bowl rings as a starter on the Steelers' offensive line) was third rounder; Guss Scott was a third rounder and Bobby McCray (Super Bowl ring with the New Orleans Saints) was a seventh rounder. .

  • Taylor Jacobs was the 4th WR the year before Zook arrived. He was our #1 WR. There was ZERO depth. You know that. There's not even a debate there. We won 8 games a year. For a place like Florida, the cupboard as bare. Jeremy knew that. Spurrier knew that. Look down the roster. There were some very good players at certain spots. There were some very average players at other spots and some very bad misses taking up valuable scholarships.

  • Let's see ...

Quarterbacks Rex Grossman (first round), Ingle Martin (played two years in the NFL although he did transfer to Furman after his sophomore year).

Taylor Jacobs in 2001 caught 38 passes for 712 yards and seven touchdowns, third best on the team.

Zook also inherited wide receivers Carlos Perez (11 catches 178 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Kelvin Kight (8-93, 2 TDs) who both played in the NFL, OJ Small (caught 1-24 in 2001 but ended up catching 116 passes the next three years for Zook) and Dallas Baker; tight ends Aaron Walker (16-179 in 2001) and Ben Troupe (9-98).

He inherited running backs Earnest Graham, who still plays for the Tampa Bay Bucs, and Ran Carthon, who played three years in the NFL.

You could make a case for offensive linemen that Zook inherited although he did have three very experienced players in Max Starks, Shannon Snell and Jon Colon. Beyond them there wasn't much depth.

Defensively, I'd say Zooker inherited a pretty decent group: linemen Clint Mitchell, Tron LaFavor, Bobby McCray and Ian Scott .... all were drafted and played in the NFL; linebackers Mike Nattie (drafted), Bam Hardmon and Travis Harris; DBs Todd Johnson, Guss Scott and Keiwan Ratliff (all drafted and played in the NFL), Robert Cromartie (started all 12 games in 1999, 6 in 2000 when he was injured half the season but missed 2001 with an injury), Daryl Dixon (started 1999, nickel in 2000 and 2001, made All-SEC in 2003 after missing 2002), Lester Norwood (started six games and played in 32 prior to Zook), and Vernell Brown.

  • He can call us whatever he wants - who cares.

Until his record shows him to be relevant in the National Football scene (not the Almost Competitve football conference) he has no real credibility.

Just ask yourself one question - who would you want as your football coaches, Florida or florida state?

    Enough said.

  • I'll say it once again. There were some good players, but many of the guys who filled out the roster belonged in the bush leagues. They had no other offers. When Spurrier says he left the cupboard bare, it probably was.

Franz, you know Fedora, Strong, Wickline, etc... you've talked to them. They say the same things I say. There was zero depth and there were gaping holes.

  • I actually think Jimbo is going to be successful although I'm not sure he's going to be "all-world" as some of our fine friends from the west seem to suggest. I think anyone who coaches at the Tallahassee Trade School who recruits reasonably well will have success, particularly playing in the ACC, which isn't the SEC by a long, long, long shot.

Before he's claimed as the best at anything or better than a coach who's actually proven something, I think it might be wise to let Jimbo actually accomplish something, starting by winning some games as a head coach. Right now he's 0-0.

Exactly. This whole "everything is different now" mentality is like lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig when you look closely. Jimbo has been running that show for a few years -- it is his offense, his players, etc etc. They are getting a recruiting bump because they are selling the "comeback" garbage. It will take another two years or so before people wise up to it like they did for Randy Shannon.
