IMO Billy Donovan top 5 targets.

  • 1. Anthoney Bennett is one of the top players for the gators and I feel we have a good shot for him. Mccall is doing a great job and I think the gators will be in the mix until the end no matter when he commits.
    2. Alex Poythress is one of my favorite guys in this class. He does cruise once in a while but he is talented and a high character. Will come down to Florida and vandy.
    3. Kyle Anderson cant figure this one out but Billy has personally done his recruiting. He is a absolute special talent and would be a great get for the gators.
    4. Brice Johnson. Very atheltic and plays hard. Great rebounder and the staff loves this guy. Down to South Carolina, clemson, and the gators.
    5. Landry Nnoko is a raw african from cameroon and has emerging skills. Will be on campus soon.
I am not greedy so if we can land two of these guys we will have a great class. Carter will be going to FSU soon so just mark him off the board.

  • Thanks so much for the update. So no McGary in the fold? What about the class of 2013 with Hill, Walker and Noel. How's that class looking early for UF??

  • How do u know Carter is going to fsu? Franz reported coaches saying he is a gator lock...

  • No I did not report that Carter is a Gator lock. What I reported are that coaches (as in more than one) have told me that Carter is a lock for Florida. I have reported that I'm skeptical of anyone saying someone is a lock at this point in recruiting but that I did think Florida was leading.

While I do not think Carter is necessarily an FSU lock, I think Florida is going with the first dog that barks gets the bone theory and that the coaches are not going to allow another Patrick Patterson situation develop where they pass on very good players while waiting on that one marquee guy. This year there are lots of exceptional players who want to be Gators but that doesn't mean you sit and wait it out.

  • ZERO chance Carter is coming to UF, this will all make sense soon enough....Carter is out for UF

Duke will me a major player for Poythress now, before they offered I felt we were in great shape, still may be

If Anderson visits as scheduled and we WOW him and lay out clear plan of how we would run offense thru him, then we can get him....visit is the key

Nnoko as I have stated is coming on fast and I would not be shocked to see him in the class

Bennett will not be in this class if he waits until late as he says he will.....

Brice Johnson was a guy that last staff loved, but had to re-prove himself with the new staff and has quietly had a very good spring...I think Clemson took the lead from UF when we changed coaches, but he is a kid that if he waits until other top targets of ours decide and we still have a spot, he could be a Gator

  • Very interesting about Carter. Looking forward to finding out what's going on.

As I remember it, you were more specific than this. I thought you said a couple of Big East coaches at the Peach Jam said they would be surprised if Carter went any place else than Florida.

If so, it was pretty clear you were not talking about UF coaches saying he was a lock to UF. Also UF coaches would never say that on the record to you, even if they thought it and you probably would not report that way as it would be a UF NCAA infraction if they said that to you and the NCAA found out.

  • So this class MAY not be as strong as expected...Still very, very good, but I was hoping for a UK-like class. I at least hope we land Anderson. Wouldn't mind getting Mitch either...

Why would you ever expect a UK like class? They are a blue blood school with a cheating coach....we will always recruit well as long as BD is coach, and since about 1999 we are one of the top 5-7 recruiting schools in CBB...cannot ask for much better IMO....all this with a fan base that does not really support basketball, at a football school, with an awful arena.....all things considered we have way overachieved as a CBB program IMO....

I have news for you, UF could win a title every year for 5 years and UK would be bottom feeders in the SEC for 5 years and UK fans would not shut up. That is just the way it is in basketball.

What don't you like about the arena? Why is it so awful? The fact that it only seats 12,000? When first built it was a highly rated facility as I recall. Especially for a school that had no established program at that time. Stormin Norman had just returned for his second stint as coach so there was some anticipation.

That was 30 years ago, right?

The arena is fine, but it's not as nice and shiny as venues in Coral Gables and now Orlando as well. Even the Sun Dome is going to be getting a facelift in the next year.

I think, at some point in the next decade, Florida will have to look to replace the O'Dome. Either build a new facility, or do a complete renovation of the current structure. The time is looming near for something to be done, however.

  • The only redeeming quality about the O-Dome is the fans are right on top of everything and it holds the noise in. Otherwise it ranks among the two or three worst arenas in the SEC. Maybe only The Tad Pad at Ole Miss is worse.

There are two schools of thought: (1) Florida can't fill the 12,000 seat arena consistently so why build another one and (2) build a new, first class arena befitting of a team that has had 14 straight 20 win seasons, has won two national titles and been to three Final Fours in 11 years and put it in a decent place where people can actually park their cars and they will fill it up.

    Personally, I go with #2.

  • Where would you put the new arena?

I lovey the idea of a new home for hoops, but I'm not convinced that it gets the fans to show up.

Maravich center is the worst, it is literally falling apart.....

I think a 9000-10000 seat basketball only arena on campus is ideal...where you put it is anyone's guess.....

and I think for this seasons the Rowdies have been moved back farther away from the court, so major bummer there

There is plenty of property on the west side of campus. Personally, rather than renovate McKethan, I thought they should have built a new stadium on the west side of campus that featured better parking and a better stadium. They could have turned the site where McKethan is now to an indoor track/indoor football practice facility ... or they could keep baseball and turn the O-Dome into an indoor track/football practice facility and build a 14,000-seat arena that is state of the art and could host major concerts, something that Gainesville misses because no really good act wants to play the O-Dome.

As for the Maravich Center, they are spending major bucks to renovate and reconstruct that one and it might be downsized to about 13,000 from its 15,000 seats in the process.

Too bad we couldnt knock down the presidents mansion behind the football practice field and put it there. Bernie doesnt live there anyway.
Maybe move the track and soccer stadium to SW campus, and put it there, right across from the practice facility?
