  • Just got into a verbal jousting match with host Pete Prisco during my weekly segment on his show. We were supposed to talk about the Gators and the NCAA Tournament and spring football and instead, it was about our friend Tebow. Pete is an NFL media snob and all those folks think Tebow is the worst quarterback they've ever seen, and Jacksonville would have been 1,000 times worse if they had gotten Tebow. It's just lunacy.

Look, I realize Tim is hardly a finished product and may never amount to an a big-time NFL quarterback. But to dismiss what he did last season, and say the wins don't count, that just makes you a hater if you can't acknowledge that he helped lead an awful team to the playoffs. All it would have cost Jacksonville was probably a third-round pick. A freakin' third-round pick, plus Tebow comes in at a salary below $2 million, for the chance to make the most irrelevant franchise in the NFL at least relevant in the short term.

What is the risk for the Jaguars? Nothing. If he succeeds, you're in great shape and you're selling out the place and life is grand. If he falls on his face, how will that set the franchise back any? All you've lost is a third-round draft pick, which is not going to make a difference in Jacksonville's future. And he will have created some buzz and helped sell tickets for a faceless franchise that is completely irrelevant and basically has been since the early Coughlin days.

It just amazes me that other young quarterbacks are given a pass and Tebow, in the eyes of many, shouldn't be given a chance to grow into an NFL quarterback. And oh by the way, help win a ton of games in the process.

My Jacksonville radio days may be history!

  • It's funny that so many quarterbacks who weren't 7-4 as a regular season starter and weren't 1-1 in the playoffs get a free pass. Tim reminds me of Joe Kapp and Billy Kilmer. They weren't pretty but they won a lot of games and got their teams to the Super Bowl.

  • It's maddening. I've been watching ESPN for about an hour. When the Jets trade was reported, an analyst (sorry don't remember the name) said that they need to tell Sanchez that Tebow isn't his back-up and that he is only being brought in for certain packages. That Sanchez didn't need to worry about Tebow. Everyone is concerned with Sanchez's fragile mind.

Why shouldn't Sanchez have to worry about Tebow? If Sanchez can't handle somebody putting pressure on him and his starting job in the NFL, then he shouldn't be playing. He has done nothing to earn the "you don't have anything to worry about" talk. Also, where do they get off stating that he is only a package guy? Did I miss something there?

  • It two different standards, the other day, espn radio was discussing the Broncos signing Peyton, and what it should tell Tebow and how the management felt about him, then turned right around in the next sentence when discussing Alex Smith's feeling being hurt by the 49er's interest was to tell him "hey, it was Peyton Manning, we had to try!"

  • Jacksonville supposedly were the ones who found the $5M owed to Denver, which has halted the Jets trade.

  • One of these days Sanchez will have to put on some big boy pants. It's amazing how in football, everyone is concerned with everyone else's feelings.

Yep, last I heard the NFL was a pro league and a business. Sure doesn't seem that way sometimes.

Not to mention Terry frikken Bradshaw. They say Tim isn't smart enough to run a NFL passing offense. Bradshaw did it. And Timmy is at least 5 times as smart as that blockhead.

  • Marty, Not a fan of Pete... Did not hear the interview, but Pete in my opinion is a TOOL. He hates on Tebow everyday, but all he does is talk about him everyday.

  • Meanwhile Hoge today said Tim is the worst nfl player in history or something to that extent. Maybe tebow isnt a virgin because Hoge is acting like he did his mom.

  • For whatever reason, national type media boys think they have to go to one extreme or the other with Tebow. You're either inthe Mrrill Hoge camp or the Skip Bayless camp. It's amazing. Maybe he'll be great, maybe he'll be a bust, but he's a young player who deserves and has earned the chance to prove whether he can play for a long time inthe league or not. Every other young player gets that chance. It's like some folks want him out of the league, like it'spersonal or something.

Whenthe Jags passed the first time, at that moment, I thought they did the right things. In hindsight, I couldn't have been more wrong. But the fact it hapened a second time, that's just so weak. You take a minor gamble on tebow (a third-round pick or so) and a minimal financial hit and the return will be great in the short term and who knows, maybe unbelievable inthe long term. And again, if it fails, what has been lost? I just don't get it.

  • Im with you Marty! Give the man a chance, he has most definitely earned it. Im just bummed the Jets is where he is now. Im a transplanted Floridian living in Massachusetts, and can't stand the Jets! Oh well! And don't feel bad, Prisco was an ass all the way back to his Times Union days in JAX. Don't feel bad!

  • I don't feel bad. Not sure it was great radio or maybe it was. I never throught two guys sho sound like they're have a loud argument in a bar (minus the slurred speech) makes for good radio. Maybe it was.

Exactly. Unfortunately that personifies the difference b/w our country today and 20 - 30 years ago. A lot of people out there feel like they are owed something these days. NY just paid Sanchez $20M. They don't owe him sh*t. He owes them his blood, sweat and tears. If I was Rex Ryan I would have a press conference for Tebow and announce that he will push Sanchez for his starting job. Kid would probably work harder if God's favorite football player is parting seas behind him. If you get paid $20M you have no reason to complain and should do everything in your power to earn that money. If he complains, Bart Scott should elbow slap him in front of the whole team.

I think this is just a matter of sports writer Diva thinking QBs must be just like them. It is also related that simple writers like a simple story and the simplest story to tell tangential fans is that football is all about the QB. That is the name the fans remember the most and the lazy Diva sports writer does not have to do any appreciable work if they tell that story.

No. Hodge did NOT say he was the WORST player in NFL history. What he said is that Tebow is the most OVER RATED player in NFL history. And to some extent, he may be right.

Tebow is grossly over rated by the media and the minority group of fans who push him ... including me. And people who made him the second most popular player in the NFL, even before his run or success last year. And I personally think there's a bit of a problem when the trade of a 4th round pick for what is viewed to be a back-up QB is a bigger story and get's as much or more coverage than the NFL suspending one of the best coaches in the league for a year and handing down what are probably the harshest penaltie ever imposed in the history of the NFL.

And the "Tebowing" and the who is Tebow dating, and the girls on YouTube begging for dates and the SNL skits. He probably gets as much publicity as any NFL player ever has. I can see why that rubs people the wrong way, especially people like Hodge who want to see Tebow fail. So yes, I think Tebow IS arguably the most over rated player in NFL history.

Maybe it's better termed over-hyped as opposed to over rated. He's definitely the most polarizing NFL player of all time. But that's not Tebow's fault.

At the same time, Tebow really ISN'T over rated by the owners and GMs. Hodge's point was that Tebow's value was a 4th or 5th round pick and he feels that's pretty accurate. Again, I don't disagree.

Of course most of us know Tebow well enough to understand that his value to a team is SO much more than his throwing motion. We think we know his true value to an NFL team. I have gone on record as saying that I think Tebow is the Jet's starter by mid-season. Not so much because I think Tebow is the that great a QB, but I think Sanchez is that bad and on that short a leash.

Just wanted to clarify what Hodge.

I agree 100% with not appeasing Sanchez and I think Sanchez should have to fight for his starting role. And I think to some extent, the Jet's management wanted to bring somebody in who would push Sanchez and I think that was the right thing to do.

But I think the reason for the comments about coddling Sanchez had less to do with Sanchez's psyche and more to do with stability in the lock room. Just like the general public, there are players who love and players who hate Tebow. And the concern is that a guy like Tebow will even further polarize a locker room that is already in bad shape.

Yes, that's correct he did say most overrated in history which is still patently absurd.

You're saying Tebow was more overrated than purple drank aka "Jamarshmellow" or even Ryan Leaf? Both were #1 and #2 respectively IIRC and got paid a helluva lot of money to do nothing but fail repeatedly and horribly. They never won jack, they had awful attitudes, and they are less overrated than Tebow? Come on. I find that just ridiculous not to mention he was saying all players in NFL history.

Hoge has a vendetta if that wasn't absolutely obvious by now.

    htowngator

  • Russell and Leaf were definitely overrated by owners and GMs they were drafted, but they quickly became total BUSTS once they hit the NFL. The media and fans really never hyped them once they saw they sucked.

Tebow is not a bust. He has a place in the NFL. Mark Sanchez is not a bust but I would classify him as over rated. Same with Tony Romo. A bust versus being overrated, at least in my book, is a key distinction.

I would say Sanchez is a bust as I would anyone picked in the first round that's had multiple years starting or trying w/o any success.

Romo at least has success and is a good QB. Sanchez sucks.
