It was turf. They put it down in the early 1970s when it was believed UF had the fastest team in the county.
The turf also made the place even hotter at field level.
Few interesting notes.
-Game billed as South vs. West, and after a TD you see a HUGE Rebel flag being waved in the Florida crowd. -At one point, you can see well-known pro golf Andy Bean celebrating on the UF sideline. UF grad that won at Doral an incredible 5 times. -Notice there are no bleachers between the field and the South end zone. --- Just 20 yards of dirt. -That is the old press box. The first edition of the skyboxes came I believe 2 years later. -At the very end, you see Pell sprint off the field. The announcers miss it, but briefly you can see Pell came back out ... That is when he did his famed victory lap.
As many of you, a 10-year Will Muschamp was in the stands that day.

Always felt this was the game that put UF in the National Coversation in football where it has remained to this day. Pell's teams played hard.
While this was Wilbur's game there were so many great names -
Spencer Jackson, Wayne Pease, Tyrone Young, Tim Newton, Fernando Jackson - (Best 5-11 205 LB I ever saw) Tony Lilly
to name just a few..........
Thanks Keith....great memories!
