For your viewing pleasure: Gators vs. Trojans

  • 1982 game.

Swamps looks so different in many ways.
Keith Jackson is classic. Frank Broyles had once been an assistant at Florida.

    1982 USC @ Florida

On September 11, 1982, a capacity crowd of 73,238 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium witnessed perhaps the greatest defensive performance by a single player in the history of the University of Florida football program. The highly-touted Southern Cal Trojans came to Gainesville and were upset by the hometown Gators, 17-9, in what could be called a program-defining win. Just three years prior, in 1979, the Gators went 0-10-1. Following the upset win, the Gators compiled a 34-8-3 mark over the next four seasons. The star of that game? Linebacker Wilber Marshall, who flew around the field to collect 14 tackles and sack USC quarterback Sean Salisbury 4 times. His performance earned him national recognition when he was named the Defensive Player of the Week by both Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press.

  • Looks like the field is turf. Weird looking compared to the current stadium.

    Stiller

  • They called it "Doug's Rug",glad the turf is gone.

  • It was turf. They put it down in the early 1970s when it was believed UF had the fastest team in the county.

The turf also made the place even hotter at field level.

    Few interesting notes.

-Game billed as South vs. West, and after a TD you see a HUGE Rebel flag being waved in the Florida crowd.
-At one point, you can see well-known pro golf Andy Bean celebrating on the UF sideline. UF grad that won at Doral an incredible 5 times.
-Notice there are no bleachers between the field and the South end zone. --- Just 20 yards of dirt.
-That is the old press box. The first edition of the skyboxes came I believe 2 years later.
-At the very end, you see Pell sprint off the field. The announcers miss it, but briefly you can see Pell came back out ... That is when he did his famed victory lap.

As many of you, a 10-year Will Muschamp was in the stands that day.

That turf was horrible, similar to concrete with 1/4 inch outdoor carpet on top.

    -Other notes

-I was a UF freshman. Second game as a student. We had beaten Miami (Jim Kelly) the week before.
-The South End zone was complete enough to host fans, but they were still working on finishing it
-Jimmy Buffet sang the National Anthem that day. a Capella! It was an interesting redition
-A huge Hot Air balloon emblazoned with "Troj-Enz" appeared off in the distance North of the stadium and the crowd went wild!
-Lots on condom/dick jokes at the expense of USC that day.

  • Historic game. I like the old school color commentary too. WM was a boss that day. I watched him play in HS at Astro where he played TE mostly. Thanks for posting.

  • Always felt this was the game that put UF in the National Coversation in football where it has remained to this day. Pell's teams played hard.

While this was Wilbur's game there were so many great names -

    Spencer Jackson,
    Wayne Pease,
    Tyrone Young,
    Tim Newton,
Fernando Jackson - (Best 5-11 205 LB I ever saw)
    Tony Lilly

    to name just a few..........

    Thanks Keith....great memories!

As you know, it was Lilly that kept UF from beating Southern Cal AGAIN the next year.

With Florida leading late, his pass interference call on a hail mary put the ball at the Gators 1 (different rules back then). USC scored I believe on the final play of the game to tie it.

But the Trojans missed the PAT ...

Final score 19-19 Gators and Trojans at the L.A. Coliseum.

Arguably one of the 10 wildest finishes in Gators football history
