  • I don't see why they are keeping Jerami Grant, they already have Marcus Smart and Sam Decker. James at least gives them some size

    BD is going to be busy with USA bball for the entire month of June it seems vs meshing with new staff and cruitin?

    Nichols list pre-getting cut: As far as colleges, Nichols says he’s considering Duke, North Carolina, Tennessee, Memphis, Kansas, Ohio State, Florida and Virginia, among others.

    Don't know a whole lot about this, but I can't believe head coach of the 18 and under national team looks bad to recruits. We have some first class assistants who can call on recruits and use BD's name by saying "Billy would call you himself but he is coaching the National Team"...I mean that would have to create some excitement if I am a 17-18 year old top prospect. You are correct it probably didn't help us with Nichols, but if he didn't perform as expected at this venue, he likely would not have been on our short list regardless; then again, it might help Nichols in the long run.

    BD and the other members of USA U18 staff decided to cut Nichols and Williams....dont understand logic that if he wasnt good enough for U18 he isnt good enough for UF.....most of guys invited are top 25 prospects / 10-15 got cut...guys UF would kill to sign

    we have little chance at 95% of them....irrespective of Nichols and Williams good enough for U19 has nothing to do w/ if good enough for UF....let me remind you we have signed guys named Cody Larson, Nimrod Tishman, Ray Shipman et all last 3-4 yrs

    fairly safe to say UF would be very happy signing Nichols and Williams....clearly BD did not let his UF responsibilities/biases influence the U18 selection process for the betterment of USA Basketball but IMO to the detriment of UF

    that and i don't think he was the sole cutter of prospects...he has 2-3 assistant coaches that were also making the decisions...

  • When you're bringing together kids from all over the country who haven't played together before, it's usually not about talent. They've all got talent. It's about finding the 12 kids who play best together. The kids who are invited to try out for the USA teams know and understand this all too well. It benefits a coach like Donovan when a kid he's recruiting is able to survive the cut and be a part of the team, but rarely does it hurt that badly in recruiting. That's because the kids understand better than anyone else which kids play best together.

  • K. Hill was too old to play on the team-not by much - so that's why he didn't get an invite. Not sure why Walker didn't get a shot. Billy does not cut the kids by himself, there is a committee. Just to receive an invite is a huge honor. Some great players got cut, some did not even get an invite. IMO, this will not affect UF recruiting in the least. Billy & the trainer will be back on campus when the freshman show up for Summer B session in a couple of weeks. And as Brooklyn said, July is the live period when coaches can watch & contact the kids, their parents & AAU Coaches. By the end of July, the domino's will begin falling again when the 2013's start commiting.
    I think this helps Billy & his recruiting efforts moving into July. With the Ass't coaches being stable this summer & not all leaving for other jobs, I think Fla. will have better success signing bigs than last summer. I still feel - IMO - this was the root cause of not getting the bigs last summer. You cannot put a price on Ass't Coaching stability.

  • Obv U18 responsibility / time commitment is fractions vs coaching NBA guys in world.play but dookies have grumbled that coach K s involvement there has hurt them recruiting

    Who knows may be coincidence that dookie slide recruiting coincided with USA ball

    Unlimited texting / email starts in a few weeks I believe so hopefully BD isn't too pre occupied to show recruits "the love" by hitting them early an often ....I'm thinking urban back in the day working 2 blackberries type stuff
