  • Some of the most popular gator fans I know didn't go to UF. Same with FSU fans, Bama fans etc. etc.

it's the same with every fanbase

    ESPECIALLY MIAMI

Me personally, if you love the gators as much as I do I don't care where you got your degree from or if you didn't even go to college....you're my amigo

  • Look folks. I had the exact opposite experience than most Gators. I didn't grow up a Gator fan. My father was an Alabama fan, my mother was from friggin Texas and was a Texas fan. I went to catholic schools all my life and was an Irish fan b/c of that influence from the priest.

It wasn't until I finally set foot on the campus and UF and lived life as a Gator student attending Gator games that I became a Gator. I mean, I was hooked fast. My logic, why still be an Irish fan when it is UF that took me in and gave me a chance to be who I am today.

My point, we all have different stories as to why we are Gators. Some grew up Gators but, for whatever reason, didn't attend school at UF. Does that mean they don't get those same goose bumps I've gotten for years when we sing "We Are the Boys" or hear the "GO GATORS" chant? Of course not.

As long as you are not some fair wheather fan that only wears the Orange and Blue when Florida is winning, as long as you support that Gators regardless of the score on the field through thick and thin, come hell or high water, THEN YOU ARE A GATOR!!!

Having the privilidge to get to actually attend UF and graduate from UF simply means you were lucky that the situation and circumstance was such that you got to go to school there as well, but it does NOT give you a "special title" or make you "more" of a Gator than anyone else who bleeds Blue and Orange.

At least that is how I see it.

"...For he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother, Be he ne'er so vile....."
    (metaphorically in this case)

    :-)

  • I kind of stand with feesh on this one. I'm not saying anyone's not as big a fan because they didn't graduate from Florida. Heck, there have been a ton of good reasons brought up in this thread why some people are just as big diehard Gators fans as graduates, if not moreso.

It's just a semantics distinction, I guess. I would call people who graduated from Florida: "Gators," while calling those who didn't, but love and support the Gators: "Gators fans."

Like feesh said, it doesn't make you any less of a fan. Heck, many Gators fans are much better supporters of Florida than actual graduates. Just look at the student section these days and you know that.

What always irked me more than anything as a fan was when rival fans, who never attended the Alabama, Auburn, LSU or whatever school they went to, would try to trash-talk my school and brag about how their school was so much better. I could never reconcile THAT with myself, knowing they didn't even go there. I think that's probably why I lean toward the feesh side of this semantics debate.

  • A fan is a fan.

  • If that's the case, most people, like most of the fans at Notre Dame games, may as well not even bother showing up. I go to UF and went there over ND, but I still consider myself a diehard Irish fan as well. If being a fan of a college team meant you had to go to that college in order for that to happen, then you might as well say you have to live in the actual city or state of a professional team in order to root for them.

Just my take, but I bet the A. Department and the President could care less if you attended or are just a "fan" as long as you by those tickets and fill those stands and give contributions to "your" school.

Y'all are sounding a little elitist right now, again, just my opinion as a fellow UF graduate.

Another way to look at it, if you are a mechanic in the Air Force that works on the figher jets, but not the pilot that flies them into combat, is the mechanic not still a valued Veteran and part of the same Air Force? Silly analogy I suppose, but that is how I see all Gators, graduates or "fans", as part of the same Gator nation.
