Michigan "stole" him at the last minute.
It's been brought up in football, but it's still relevant to basketball. If we signed Hill and Walker in March/April, everyone would be psyched! It's just like getting commits on signing day. Is a recruit worth more right around signing day compared to October? No. We're bringing in two top-10 kids, and two great transfers (and we had to out-recruit other schools to get them as well!). Enjoy it.
that is my point...we need to better identify talented bigs, who may not be highly rated as others, and get them in and develop them...reality is we likely are not getting a MCDAA big kid unless he is a FL native....we have done poorly getting the good ones with potential, and developing them....that is the job of the staff.....it is like we go all or nothing on the MCDAA types, and have no backup plan when we miss....
Thank you! I swear I feel like I'm talking to a wall sometimes with these "Billy struggles on the recruiting trail" folks.
That is not at all what happened...convenient story for the game spun by the announcers....the kid's handler was always going to deliver him to Bieline and Mich.....everyone on AAU circuit knew that....he never told BD he was coming to UF....not even close....he did not even realyy visit...stopped by for half a day on his own while on vacation in FL
Yes I was referring to the announcer's comment. My point, and why I used quotes, was that his recruitment was dirty just like alot of these other guys everyone complains about us not getting.
I agree...which is why outside of a PY or Walker (MCDAA bigs with ties to UF) we should focus on top 75-200 bigs, identify 5-6 every cycle we like, and recruit the crap out of them....then lans 1-2 each cycle and develop them...as great of a program as we are, we are just never going to beat the blue bloods for most of the truly elite bigs out of HS.....Harris and Walker will certainly add length and athleticism we need next year...no doubt.....
Forget the name anthony bennett and replace it with brice johnson, kyle andersn, alex proythress etc . UF had 2 guys on roster over 6 8" with one being a softer perimeter guy in Murphy
Prather and Yeguette played admirably at the 4/5 spot but neither has the size to be legit elite frontline guys for top 5 teams
Hats off to billy D the coach, did a tremendous job with avg to below avg talent for a top 15 ranked team
BUT shame on billy D the recruiter, he made his rep as a MONSTER recruiter starting out his career, something went wrong post 04ers on the recruitng front...don't tell me its now "dirty" recruiting lol, recruitng has always been dirty
Think billy has to decide if he wants to outwork everyone like he did when younger to get mike miller away from unc/kansas or if he is content making 4mill a year and perennial sweet 16s cuz we don't have FFour talent beating door down to play for UF nor the machine kansas etc have to sign 3-5 top 40 kids every year or deal with sharks like boehim and matta do
yea we need a udonis haslem type again REALLY BAD
Bennett - couldnt qualify in time
Anderson - UCLA aka $$$
Poythress - BD and staff messed up with AP when they went all in on Anderson
Johnson, Nnoko, and James were all legitimate misses by staff. I think the problem was they focused on too many other like Shaq G, Robert Carter, Mitch M etc
Why don't we do both?
I think this is why Billy has put two young guys on our staff. They are supposed to be the tireless recruiters that can get us in with the talent. I think the coaching turn over and some bad hires (Preston, Pitino, in terms of recruiting anyway) have put us behind a little bit. Recruiting is about relationship, and we need time for guys like McCall and Bruno to build them up. I'm hopeful that our recent success and these guys will turn up recruiting. I'm sure back to back NITs hurt our reputation a little bit.
We need bigs but I want Malik Newman in 2015 who's a total stud SG!!!!
we have tried and failed....we go "all in" on all these top kids with no real back up plan, and miss on in state kids or kids in South we could have had that go on to be very solid college bigs
How many big guys do we ideally want on the roster?
you would like 4 solid bigs to go 2 deep at the 4 and 5 spots....we had 3 this year with a 6'6" SF in Prather playing out of position to help out.....anymore than 4 good bigs on a roster and kids get disgruntled about PT most of the time....if you have 4 solid true bigs, and then guys like DFS and Prather who can slide down in a pinch due to fouls, matchups, etc, then you are in business

So do you think Billy D tries to land a transfer for 2014-2015?
Is there anyway we can add a big for next year Bullis or has the ships sailed?
Agree with you 100% there.
