We will struggle to get back to a FF....in reality, we really overachieved relative to our talent to make the last 3 Elite 8's....so in the respect staff has done an awesome job.....on the other hand, our inability to recruit bigs who can score back to the basket and also recruit quality post depth has done us in on the biggest stage...and will continue to do so...
The last big we recruited that could score back to basket out of HS was Mo Speights in 2005 or 2006....think about that for a minute....PY was highly rated and has been a solid Gator, but he cannot score down low....and all of the developmental kids we have taken (Pitchford, Larson, etc) have left the program....thus we have a 6'6" SF in Prather playing PF almost his entire career.....there really is no excuse for this....we face challenges recruiting against the blue bloods, but no reason we should not be able to identify and land solid bigs every class, along with the occasional MCDAA like PY, Walker, etc...
Take 2013 class, we get a stud in Walker (if he gets into school) but even he is just a freak ATH that is not going to score down low unless it is a drop down pass for dunk or O rebound....he will help a ton no doubt...
We had Hill locked up Dec 2011 and Walker July 2013, there was no excuse not to be able to land another good big or 2 in 2013 class and sign them in Nov....now we are left yet again hoping for a late spring addition or a transfer, both of which are dicey, and neither would help much next season....we mishandled Rimmer a bit and he left (mostly on his own though, and let KU come into Gville and steal Embiid....and in 2012 we take PG and 3 wings....things that make no sense
BD needs to do a better job recruiting big guys, but the thing is, I am not sure it is going to happen anytime soon....we did not even recruit 2013 top 100 big Demetrius Henry much at all, and he was oroginally a 2012 kid, and now a 2013 kid
Bullis, you know better than any of us that Billy has did everything possible getting those guys. Circumstances just led to them going another direction.
Just like mcgary, they even stated at the beginning of the game that he had told billy that he was coming.
well honestly thats all on Billy!! i think he has done a great job but there is really no excuse for these recruiting misses. i am disappointed that with all the sucess we have had, we still cannot recruit!! its amazing
i been harping on this in other threads....why are 5 roster spots being taken by 2 transfers? (this i understand) and 3 frosh who we dont need really at ALL this yr or next in DG, BO, Dev Walker.....those 3 spots at a min could have been HUGE this yr with an athletic SF/PF type as a soph 6 7"+ kid and a landry Nnoko 7ft project at center (see georgi deng type long term project)
makes no sense to me on the recruiting....roster should have FOUR 6 9"+ guys , FOUR 6 5" 6 8" guys and the rest as PG/SG types to fill out 13 man roster
cray at how uneven our recruiting is
McGary is one guy, cant afford to then miss on Anthony Bennett, Brice Johnson, Xmas / Nick Jacobs etc prior yrs
why not get AT LEAST ONE landry nnoko, rimmmer etc big???
Again this thread is not intended to complain, I have enjoyed the last 3 seasons A TON, but we have severely lacked in big man recruiting....staff has to be better at identifying kids earlier we can land, and landing them....and getting the occasional MCDAA who has ties to UF (PY, Walker etc)......
How good is Harris?
yea UF built manic press demons BD 40 minutes of press with a roster full of rim rockers and long athletic guys ....we really got away with that post the 04ers.....too many guards and undersized guards and not ENOUGH long athletic bigs who can block shots/rebound and get out in transition for us
How much has the loss of Anthony Grant as a coach impacted the recruiting and development of Bigs. To me, it is not just the recruiting but the development also.
I know, and it's acceptable coming from you in this instance.
But, it's not just offer big man, charm big man, big man comes to UF like some of these guys think. The problem is that those types are being wooed by every top program in the country and A LOT of those programs have different rule books.
IMO, we need more Haslems, Noah and Horfords - those are the types that Billy has to get back to finding.
Pel was actually the primary big coach when BD, Grant and he were together....
How many years does Harris have left?
Bullis I understand and completely agree that our big man recruiting is lacking but does Michigan, Syracuse, Ohio state, or Louisville have guys you can throw it down to and score consistently. McGary gets all of his buckets from burkes penetration besides that the dude is poor offensively. Ohio has zero inside game, Louisville has a center that is like a young, and cuse has very little I side game. Our big men are decent but what separates us is our guard play. The NCAA tourny is usually won with guard play. See Michigan with Burke, OSU with craft, Louisville with smith and Siva and cuse with A lotto pick in carter Williams.
Honestly and quite frankly wilbekin, boynton and Rosario are smallish guards who are average. I love what these seniors have done for us but it's time for a change and I am excited for the change. We need more nba talent on our roster period and we will have it next year.
Our team overachieved this year and we struggled to score offensively!!!
Thanks for the clarification.....I guess we shall see next year, if the staff stays intact. Are there any rumblings that the current staff will transition any?
Can't Murphy score inside normally? He played like shit the last two games (probably cos of the flu).
I agree with other people that year it would be great to have a ton of great bigs, but that's difficult and there aren't many programs that have it.
We just need to recruit MORE athleticism and size at all 5 spots
Need 8-9 raw athletes at all 5 spots that can develop and contribute as Jrs/Srs (ie prather/yeguette /young types)
Mix in one 5 star type per yr/mcD AAs (beal, miller, brewer, hill etc)
And you've built a really long/athletic 11+ man rotation that can defend and press like Billy grew up coaching... We have gotten so far away from Billy ball post 04ers due to a lack of recruiting big athletic guards and SF types...instead we have gone after undersized, skilled 3pt shooting guards that are not lock down defenders due to size/less effective pressing
Gotta agree with this 100%. Seems we have lost out on every big we have recruited since we signed Patric. I love Young but he has been a bit of a disappointment with what I was expecting out of him when he came to Florida. He isn't a good rebounder and is very limited on offense. I expect him to return for his senior season because I really don't think he can earn a spot on a NBA roster. Donovan had better pull a rabbit out of his hat or we are going to get killed by UK next season.
You guys need to stop. Walker and Harris both joining this team next year. Two elite bigs. Even though Tre is a transfer, we still had to out-recruit Kansas for him. We got Walker over Kansas and Louisville. The sky is not falling.

I'm sick of hearing about how we missed on Bennett. We didn't "miss" on Bennett. He didn't have grades. He was all Gator.
As was McGary.
Yea it is a "miss" , if kid signs/plays elsewhere it is a "miss" ...all this BS about grades is just that, he got them eventually and/or UF should have spent recruiting resources on a kid who could qualify
as for UF -- we got to get some more beasts....Montrzl Harrell rivals top 75 kid -- need to get some big grown ass bangers out of HS vs finesse guys IMO
demetrius henry fits this mold IMO this yr
Proud of this team. Sucked to lose because I was in attendance, but they overachieved. This team doesn't have a single 1st rd talent in the starting 5 and they made the elite 8. Looking forward to a more talented team in the very near future.
"Who was your source? Church mice in here....." - Coach Muschamp
Except KY dropped him at the same time we did. Different conferences have different requirements. He obviously couldn't qualify in the SEC.
What happened with MCGary?
