Why for football do they not have athletes run the 40 & cone drill in pads?
i know im not the brightest person in the world but if i was evaluating football talent and speed, i want to know how fast people are in game, Pads and Helmet.
Perfect example is Chris Rainey, nobody doubts that boys speed on a track (or walmart parking lot in the AM). But how many times did he get chased down in game (cant tell you when but i remember it happening on more than a few occasions). How many times did Demps get chased down in game (0). What was Percy's 40 time at combine it was good but not great, who in pads in the NFL is faster than him? (if there are any its not many and way fewer than the number of people with faster 40 times than him).
All that to say has this ever been discussed in high enough circles where something could of been done? or does nobody that matters really care?
I have always thought they should do that, but it won't happen IMO. If the had to do it in pads, they wouldn't show up or wouldn't run at the combine.
Winningest Program in College Football since 1990!
Percy ran in the 4.3s
Why just the 40? Why not the jumps and shuttle as well? Don't think it would make much of a change in the bench press.

"You're not a good guy, you go somewhere else. We'll play you. We'll beat you."
on NFL.com it has his combine 40 at 4.41 which is good to very good like i said... great to me is 4.30.
But thats not really the topic, my point still stands... there were people at Percy's combine and since who were laser timed at running the 40 faster than him. But put them all in pads and id bet money Percy would be in the top handful. even more so for the cone drills for Percy where i think his quickness is even more impressive then his speed.
yea sorry i agree, anything that would be hindered by pads (like jumping & running) should be done in pads. and when i said cone drills i was thinking shuttle.
We should have random people trying to tackle the person running the 40 too, it'll make it more realistic.
Beatings will continue until morale improves

Should take the wounderlic test in pads too.
But really it is to cut out variables in the testing. The combine is not testing football skills but more so physical skills and measuring it against each player.
It would be nice to have them involved in more football related activities but it makes them more susceptible to injury.
Ohhh let's doooo it
ooorrrannngeeee and bluuueee it
Because in combine scenarios they are making comparisons between different athletes at positions of need and the thinking is that pads will affect their speed in largely the same ways across all athletes.
