Was going to ask Gators111 to post these if he wanted, but he's got more important things to do. Been asked by some to share these stories, so going share.
Some of y'all can hate on me all you want, don't give a f*** anymore.
I'm going to share some recruiting stories b/c they are interesting and I know several folks ask to hear them each year. None of the stories involved Gator recruits b/c I don't have any Gator connnections except for you guys. So this is full of Ole Miss stories, but gives a nice inside on how recruiting works, and also some insight into how high school coaches work and FSU recruits.
So if you don't want to read another damn word about Ole Miss, don't read these stories.
Keep in mind, these stories are second hand, I was not there, I do not vouche for the validity though I do personally trust the folks who shared these stories with me. However, they are all rumors of what "supposedly" happened. I have no proof that any of this is real (disclaimer).
All that said, here you go.
How To Flip A 5-Star-Blue Bell Ice Cream
The back story on how Ole Miss ended up swooping in and stealing OT L. Tunsil out of Lake City and away from the likes of Georgia and Alabama is a great example of what recruiting is all about. Last year, Ole Miss sends out a questionnaire to all the top recruits as most schools do to gauge interest. They ask many things, like what is the most important factor in your decision of where you will play college ball. Well Tunsil answered "relationships with the coaching staff."
Well Coach Chris Kiffin took this and ran with it. He asked HC Freeze if he could go after Tunsil. At first, Freeze was reluctant, b/c he thought Ole Miss and no shot at him. Kiffin persisted, Freeze relented, and Kiffin started to recruit Tunsil. Chris Kiffen then proceeded to spent every chance he got building a relation ship with Tunsil, Tunsil's girlfriend, and, most importantly, Tunsil's mom. Kiffin would visit Lake City HS every chance he got. He visited the family every chance he got. The coaches at LCHS, after they kept seeing Kiffin in the gym, would frequently ask him if he thought "Ole Miss really has a shot?" Kiffin would just smile and say, that's why I'm here. He sent over 850 face book messages and post to Tunsil, 450 face book post to Tunsil's girlfriend, and would talk to Tunsil's mom on the phone all the time (all cleared first through the NCAA). After months of dogging Tunsil like this, Tunsil developed a strong friend's ship with Kiffin. Tunsils mom fell in love with Kiffin (not like that). And finally Chris Kiffin convinced Freeze in December that it was time to meet Tunsil.
When Freeze showed up at Lake City High School , the entire coach staff was wearing either Georgia or FSU gear. Freeze first reaction was to ask Chris Kiffin, "why did you waste my time?" Little wonder Gators have trouble recruiting Lake City these days. Later at that first meeting, when alone with Tunsil and his family, Tunsil's mother told Freeze, "that man there (Kiffin), I love him, he is our favorite coach by far." Tunsil then told Freeze in December, "right now, Ole Miss leads." Keep in mind this was long before anyone even knew Ole Miss was on Tunsil's radar. Freeze didn't even believe it, kept saying to Tunsil, "now come one son, don't pull my leg."
So Tunsil goes for his official visit in January. One of the things that Chris Kiffin had discovered in building this relationship with the family was that both Tunsil and his mom LOVE Blue Bell Ice Cream. They apparently eat it all the time. So when the Tunsil's arrive on campus, they find their hotel room fridge stocked with tons of Blue Bell Ice Cream, every flavor (cleared with the NCAA before hand, lol). At the end of the visit, Tunsil and his mom had eaten every container of ice cream.
In the end the top OT in this years ranking, Tunsil, picked Ole Miss b/c of the relationship that Chris Kiffin had built with the family.
No doubt this is the same kind of thing that Muschamp does and why we hear all the time how much the families love Coach Muschamp. As they say, down South, Momma or the Uncle often picks the school.
haha let's hear em.
"Who was your source? Church mice in here....." - Coach Muschamp
Golson-FSU Negative Recruiting
Austin Golson, the Rivals 8th ranked OT, originally committed to FSU in April of 2012, though he was pledged to them even longer than that. He is out of Prattville , Alabama , about 20 miles North of Montgomery right in the middle of disputed territory between Auburn and Alabama . His entire family are Auburn fans and his house is supposedly riddled with Auburn crap.
So word got out that Golson might be open to going somewhere besides FSU. Most everyone figured he would flip to Auburn if he didn't go to FSU. Well, again, Ole Miss got in b/c of their other top players, kids like Nkemdiche and Treadwell, convincing Golson to "take a look" at Ole Miss during all the camps they attended together. Same thing kids like Nick Washington and Hargreaves were doing for our Gators. So Golson took his OV to Ole Miss a few months back and feel in love with the place (for whatever reason you want to imagine).
So word then leaks that he is going to decomit from FSU and Jimbo GETS PISSED. They take an in home with him and, according to Golson, dog cussed the hell out of him. Things such as, "how can you be committed to us for over a year and suddenly change your mind, what the **** is the **** all about *****. Telling him he'd be nothing at Ole Miss, never end up winning anything there, and other things he supposedly said during that last visit also along those lines. Apparently the last exchange between Jimbo and Golson and his family was NOT polite or pleasant. At one point, during the exchange, Jimbo said something to the effect, "that must have been one hell of a visit to Ole Miss," to which Golson simply replied, "yes it was." They did not part on good terms. Don't let any Nole fool you, THEY DESPERATELY needed and wanted Golson.
After Golson decomitted from FSU, his entire family then pressured him "strongly" to go to Auburn . Several distant relatives would call him up and leave almost nasty voice mails on his cell phone, cussing him out if he didn't pick Auburn .
Of note, we really should thank Ole Mi$$ here, in the end they stole 4 recruits from Jimbo that he figured he could get, not just Golson.
Tony Conner-Don't Piss Mom Off
Tony Conner, the Rivals 11th ranked Safety out of Batesville, Mississippi, was down to Alabama and Ole Miss. Supposedly Batesville High School coach wanted a job at Ole Miss when Freeze was hired (they use to coach in high school at the same time, there is some professional jealousy here at Freeze's rise through the ranks), but was not offered a job by Freeze. This pissed off the Batesville HC. Alabama decided this was a possible in with Conner, and the Bama assistant recruiting Conner would frequently stop by Batesville high school and meet not with Conner or his mom, but with Conner's coach. Alabama planned on giving Conner's HS coach an administrative job on Saban's staff if Conner picked Bama.
Conner's mom reportedly got wind of this, and become very pissed off. She felt like the high school's coach was using her son for his own benefit to land a job at Bama. By report, she went to her son, told him what was going on. She told her son that, "the choice is yours, but I don't like the way Alabama is doing business here." Meanwhile, Ole Miss was working the mother and Conner and ignoring the coach. In the end, as often happens in the South, momma won.
Finally, does Ole Miss Cheat?
Depends on how you define it. Is the staff directly involved in paying players to go to Ole Miss, hell no, at least not to my knowlege. That said, as I alluded to yesterday, there is an amazing amount of wealth in the small town of Oxford . People like John Gresham (State and Ole Miss alum), Dicky Scruggs (when not in jail), the folks that own Cellular South, the Manning's, and several other people worth far more than the Manning's all live or have homes in Oxford, Mississippi. Money flows in this town like its water. So do I think "hundred dollar" hand shakes happen around Ole Miss? All the damn time, in my opinion. Have I seen it personally, or do I have proof this happens, nope, just speculation on my part.
That said, it's the SEC folks, they are as passionate if not more passionate about their college football teams as everyone else is in the SEC. So lets not throw to many stones about those "hundred dollar handshakes" that go on around ALL of college sports least one of those stones accidently gets thrown back and shatters a few of our glass walls. Ole Miss had their best recruiting year ever, and it's still not enough to get them ranked higher than Florida on any site that I'm aware of. The rebel black bears got lucky with natural connections to folks like Nkemdiche and Treadwell and did us a favor stealing Golson from FSU and Tunsil from Georgia . Do not expect Ole Miss to recruit like this every year, they are NOT Florida or Alabama , and never will be unless they plan on moving the campus to a better recruiting spot.
That is pretty cool man! +1
Cool Stories Bro.
GOod stuff.. i tried to start a thread like this yesterday..
Luke/Jeff/gibb/dundee/hova where the Gator stories
scrape the sides up...
No disrespect, but these are all stories pumping sunshine for Ole Miss which lead me to seeing them as half truths. There's also the rumor that multiple members of the Tunsil family are recieving scholarships to Ole Miss. Also the story about how Austin Golson was walked into the hood in Tally after wandering off by himself. Not to mention the fact that his girlfriend is attending or will be attending Ole Miss. South Panola has always been a feeder school to Ole Miss so I have reservations believing the story on Conner. Nkemdiche and Treadwell were players that the staff had prior ins with as you said and they can recruit. Agree with this not becoming the norm at Ole Miss.

So all we had to do was get some damn ice cream????
That and 1300 post on facebook.
Great stuff 76!
Who else has seen those "think before you act" Muschamp commercials warning fans to be cautious in areas of recruiting and not give out any extra benefits because we all want to see the Gators succeed? No $100 handshakes here.
If this is true and Fisher acted up like that in my house I would smack right in the mouth
it's weird that pirates would go from shore to shore looking for treasure when the real treasure was in the friendships they were making
Holy crap, epic post. Thanks man
Now that's the attitude you need to have around here.
It works for me.
Speaks volumes about the character of the site.
FYI folks, not a member anymore, so when you post things in VIP status, I can't read them if they were directed at me.
