We're almost through another year -- hard to believe Will Muschamp's already wrapping up his second season at Florida. So let's rank the SEC coaches now. Here's my current list.
1. Nick Saban
2. Les Miles
3. Steve Spurrier
4. Mark Richt
5. Kevin Sumlin
6. Will Muschamp
7. Dan Mullen
8. James Franklin
9. Hugh Freeze
10. Gary Pinkel
11. Gene Chizik
12. Derek Dooley
13. John L. Smith
14. Joker Phillips

SOS - What he's done at USCe is amazing.. He's right there with Saban for top coach imo
Les Miles - Knows how to hire great asst coaches
Kevin Sumlin - A little premature, but I think this highly of him at this point
Will Muschamp - Will show to be one of the best when/if he gets the roster more complete
Mark Richt - Great recruiter, average coach with some good and some bad asst hirings over his career.
Hugh Freeze - Another premature but what he's done at Ole Miss in one year is awesome. Great future under this guy
Dan Mullen - Steady winner, but can't get over the hump (no pun intended) at MSU.
James Franklin - Great recruiter, back to back bowl games at Vandy for first time in history.
Rest.. Who cares.. All fired except Pinkel.
This list isn't about accomplishments as much as JMO. Guys who have either shown it or will show it in the future imo.
Goons belong in hockey.
I wouldn't put Sumlin as high as you (TG) have him in yr 1 personally. Champ should be 3 or 4 imo. Beyond that, I'd agree with uffeesh that don't really care.
The bottom 4 to 5 will be replaced in a month or 12 anyway...
1. Steve Spurrier
2. Nick Saban
3. Les Miles
4. Will Muschamp
5. Kevin Sumlin
6. Mark Richt
7. Gary Pinkel
8. James Franklin
9. Dan Mullen
10. Hugh Freeze
11. Gene Chizik
12. Joker Phillips
13. Derek Dooley
14. John L. Smith
A combination of what have they done, what have they done it with, and what the future holds for them. SOS has don the most with the least and built two programs. Saban is a dynasty builder and by all means is a great coach. Les, he wins. I don't know how, but he wins... Champ and Sumlin are on the same level for me, but Sumlin has more talent on offense than Champ has and Champ beat him. So I give the nod to Champ.
Joker doesn't deserve to be last other than the fact he was fired. He inherited a Kentucky team that lost a lot of talent. He could have had some success there, but we'll never know now will we?
Chizik has a MNC in his resume....must be put in fourth.....since that is the goal ....that is all.....
I'm gonna just assume you're joking
3. Spurrier (He might be slowing down in the next few years)
I really don't think Miles is that good. You'd never see Saban or SOS make the kind of in game mistakes he does and Miles makes them regularly. He's good but not that good. His best season is a 2 loss season.
1. SOS. What he has managed to do at SC is overwhelming. Lou Holtz never even got them a million miles to where SOS has them.
2. Saban. don't need to explain.
3. Muschamp. What hes done with one of the most inept offenses in recent memory is remarkable. Also to do it against by far the nations toughest schedule leaves little doubt that Champ is elite.
4. Sumlin- 1 year and already beating the top dog.
5. Miles. Always has LSU in contention, always manages to blow a game or two LSU should have won.
6. Richt. Always under achieves. But UGA is back to back East champs and they are always a team to worry about.
7. Franklin. Could have Vandy at 9 wins. That's like winning the national title and the super bowl and the US open in terms of Vanderbilt.
8. Dan Mullen. Hard to win at MSU. He's winning enough to believe he could be legit anywhere else.
9. Pinkel. Won a lot of games in Big 12. I think Mizzou will eventually be a tough outing in the East.
10. Freeze. Don't know enough about him. His teams are competitive but still hasn't done much yet.
11. Derek Dooley. Nothing ever bounced in this guys way. Had the team celebrate like national champions after beating Vandy last year. No winning attitude instilled in UT and that comes down to the coach.
12. L. Smith. Dude is a joke but was pretty decent at MSU.
13. Chizik. Absolute atrocious. has turned Auburn into a complete laughing stock. If Cam doesn't bring AU from behind in almost every single game in '10, they may have been just as bad as they are now. Chizik simply cant coach.
14. No coach at Kentucky.
Based on overall career and coaching ability
14. John L Smith
Its very clear that Chiziks title was a product of Cam and Malzahn

Not a Joke......Unless you think coaching to win is a joke?? First you need to but all the coaches that have won an SEC and MNC in one group......HMMMM Chiz is in that group...rank them.......1-4 , then the coaches that only have won an SEC Champ......Rank them...then the rest..........
If you do not win...you are just the first loser.......all of these coaches either had bad years, quit, or have been fired....ex SOS...check, check, check............Chiz has not been even fired yet!
If you do not have the Ring......then your just Dan Marino.......good but...come on!
So AD...are you a winner...or......
I think Muschamp and Sumlin are close, Muschamp gets the nod for beating him head to head.
I see where you're going with this... But Chizik is an absolutely horrible coach. It's not up for debate, IMO. Malzahn, Cam & Fairley won that championship. Chizik just wrote the check.
The CEO always writes the check......picks great people to be around him in the org. Since we are talking Head coaches here, they are the figure heads of the Team....they have great Assistant coaches around them.....The Quitter Meyer had great assistants around him...what happened when his assistants left..... well we know what happened......SOS won a MNC here not because of the offense....but it was the Stoops defense..... are they not good coaches? Another part is bringing together talent...Cam, Fairley, etc all Juco (Which is why I say, bring all the talented Juco's in)....You must have an eye for talent that can bring it on game day (Right Debose! )
Look the reason you pay these coaches the $$ is to Win.....I , for one, do not care how you do that, just win! Champ has a Shared East SEC title .....that is where he is at these 2 years at the helm.....that is how he should be ranked.
I think we should give Chizik a little credit......he can show us a Ring and a Crystal trophy!
Chizik record ..other than this year has been OK.......
Auburn Tigers (Southeastern Conference) (2009–present)
2009 Auburn 8–5 3–5 T–4th (West) W Outback
2010 Auburn 14–0 8–0 1st (West) W BCS NCG† 1 1
2011 Auburn 8–5 4–4 4th (West) W Chick-fil-A
2012 Auburn 2–8 0–7 7th (West)

One big mistake Chizik has done is bring on Scot Loeffler as an OC....how does that guy get the gigs he does??? He must have a dossier on people that would make Gen Petraeus squirm!
Always wondered that too.
Ranking the coaches would depend alot on what you are ranking them from.
turn around for the younger coaches
Proven year in year out
More with less
Every list would be different. If you could pick any coach for UF than that is different as well.
The reason I don't have Muschamp a little higher is because so far we've seen no signs of the offense becoming consistently competent. Just like Florida lost several close games last year due to inept offense this year, they've won those games this year in spite of them. If the offense doesn't improve long-term, you probably end up falling somewhere in the middle of those two years. Which isn't enough for me to name him a Top 3 coach yet.
Freeze, Sumlin and Franklin are high w/ me b/c what they have accomplished where they are. Honestly beginning of season could u say Vandy, aTm and Ole Miss would all be going bowling?
I'd flip Muschamp and Sumlin (based on head-to-head), though it would be a toss-up for me for COTY. Richt is 2-0 against Muschamp, is East champion this year and has at least one SEC on his résumé, so I still think he should be ranked above those two -- can't stand him, though. Otherwise, I agree with TG.
