Roy Williams is NOT a good coach. His X's and O's are awful and doesn't make adjustments very well IMO. I'm sure he is a good guy, but I don't see why kids want to play for him. I guess because its unc.
The two squads Roy took to the national title games at Kansas proved he could coach to a certain degree ( the ones that lost to Duke and Syracuse). He is overrated, but he is far from a bum .

But I think you could have coached those teams to a title appearance. Lol. I'm jk. He's not a bum... Overrated is a good word!
Your wrong about one thing, he isn't a good guy. Leaving his walk-ons on the court last year in Tallahassee while he took his stars to the locker room to make sure they didn't get hurt by the crowd rushing the floor.
The only person who does less with more than Roy is Rick Barnes at Tejas.
Lol I'm sittin here watching UNC get trounced by NC State... I got on here to start the same exact thread. Ole Roy just sucks! And like above, I believe Roy is about like Calipari. Able to win when they have just insane NBA talent. Years like this one show you just how good of coaches both these chumps are. They have A- to B+ talent they can't do nothing... Give them A++ talent and they can win it all, just like any other D1 coach probably could. I hate that Roy and Cal both get more love as coaches then Donovan does. At least that's the way I see it. Most would say that Roy and Cal are top 5 coaches in the business now and Billy D. is kinda second tier, maybe top 10 and it's absurd.
my fiance is a UNC grad i normally take up for Roy but he HAS to have top NBA players in order to win now he doesnt coach well, refuses to call time outs when needed wants players to play through 15+runs its stupid how much talent he gets and how little he does. If UNC ever got a brad Stevens it would be over..
Roy is not a good coach but he is a much better coach than a person.
His NC teams were recruited by the former NC coach but let us NEVER forget, when Mike Miller signed his LOI to UF, mister entitlement Roy Wiliams, the most pompous ass in all of college sports, had his former underling Fogler who was then coach of USCe, went to the NCAA to accuse Donovon of cheating. When that wasn't enough to start the investigation, the real
person (Roy) behind the false accusations was forced to put his name out there making false allegations against BD. A thorough investigation of BD and UF took place and found NOTHING.
Furthermore, when I ran GC after this took place one of the members of the site saw Roy taking the team to some event somewhere in KS. Roy was driving his team in a white van and this GC member pulled along side him on highway and waved. Roy waved back. He then did the Gator chomp at him laughing and he said what happened next was both hysterical and sad. Roy lost it. Started screaming at them going off in some psychotic road rage all while his team stood looking at him in disbelief. I dislike Roy Williams almost as much as Lane Kiffin.

I 100% agree with Pierce. He will forever be hated by me for what he tried to pull on Billy with Miller because he didnt like some young buck going out and getting star players that he wanted. Billy is 10 times the coach Roy will ever be. His first title was won with players he didnt recruit and his second title was won with a team that couldve won it the year before but got crushed by Kansas. He also left Kansas like a ahole after helping get the head football coach replaced. Bottom line, he's an ahole and as a coach he is terrible. He has had soo much talent and done jack squat with it. Also, kids dont go to UNC to play for Roy as much as they go to UNC to play for UNC. I personally think Joel Berry is making a mistake but best wishes to him. Hoefully he can get out of class early enough on those tuesdays in march to watch UNC in the NIT
I have lived in NC almost all my life where 85% of the population are tarheel fans. 90% of them are arrogant aholes who think UNC is the best team every single year. I remember in 2007 during our repeat campaign a tarhole fan telling me in ahole fashion that UF wasnt that good and that UF couldnt beat UNC. I had to walk away and grab another beer cause I was about to go fisticuffs.
All in all, I despise UNC

I'm a gator fan, but your a few bricks short of a load if you wanna maintain that Roy Williams isn't a good coach. A couple national championships say otherwise, not to mention one of the best active winning %s.
Donovan, who I love, needs the right players to run his kind of system for his offense/defense. He too has won a few nat'l championships. But when the players he requires aren't on the team or aren't mature enough yet, well UF has struggled. A lot of parallel here actually bw the two coaches. Don't be a fool.
Not even close to the same thing. Roy needs 5 NBA first rounders to have any type of success.
You don't think that Billy would have more than two Championships with the talent that Roy has had?
Do you think that UF would have missed the tournament two years running after winning back-to-back 'Ships, if we received the same preferential treatment as UNC? Heck, the second year that we missed it was a direct slap in the face.
You say that Billy needs "the right players", huh? Well, Roy ALWAYS has the right players yet he's only won two 'Ships - and only with rosters that had better players than the Bobcats!
Don't be a fool.
And the players he won his NCs were not ones he recruited. He walked into a already great team.
for his offense you need a PG and a big to run floor, everything is off the secondary break and right now he doesnt have that......
Just bc they have 5 or 4 stars next to their name, doesn't mean they are ready to run Roy's system or Billy's. Don't be a fool!! The only one who's posted a sensible argument here is Jhova7.
Patrick Young is a great ex. Minus the injuries, he couldn't be a one & done player bc for whatever reason he hasn't developed as quickly as the pundits thought he could coming out of HS.
Roy ball is all about running the point effectively (that's the biggest proponent, like any O/D there are others) and Paige isn't coming along as fast as Roy had hoped. But the kids a Frosh. Not many can do what Kyrie did as Duke. Really guys, think about this stuff instead of jumping down the throat of the first person who questions your argument. Especially when you're talking about a historic coach with as many wins at KU & UNC as Roy Williams has. Bc no knowledgeable CBB analyst, Katz or otherwise, would consider your snide comments worthy if a response.
And lastly, in NO way was I saying Williams or Donovan were better coaches than the other one. Just that each has a system. Each needs certain players to make that system work to a championship level. And those players usually don't come out of HS ready to deliver everything that's asked of them. Look at Calipari. He's had a who's who of recruits since he arrived in Kentucky and just won his only championship. That should show you how hard it is to get all the stars to align.
If some of you guys really wanna bring some basketball knowledge instead of brilliant analysis like "overrated" & "he needs 5 NbA stars just to win, and I'm not even gonna touch the idiot who thru out a one-liner about Rick Barnes, try this on and intelligently argue this claim: Brad Stevens at Butler is the best young college basketball coach in America. Prob in the Top 10 best coaches in America period!

He is the most overrated coach in college basketball. I live 30 minutes from chapel hill and I am right in the thick of ACC country. You'd be surprised how many others would agree with me and how many close friends of mine that are hardcore Heel fans no longer defend the notion that Roy is a great coach. They love him but every single one of them admit they would take Billy Donovan over him in a heartbeat.
Yeah, you are making our point. It takes the stars aligning for these coaches to succeed(Williams and Cal). And to some certain degree any coach needs to catch a few breaks to win it all. What we are saying is unless UNC and UK have a little less version of an NBA team playing for them they don't do well. And who is Andy Katz? I know who the person is but did he play the game or is he some hall of fame coach? He is a college basketball journalist with an opinion just like ours. Yeah, he works for ESPN. Big deal. He never played the game or coached it so why is his opinion so important?

So Coach K, Jim B & Syracuse, Bill Self...are all overrated by your standards too? How many championships w top recruiting classes does a coach have to win to pass the sniff test w you geniuses.
And I said "Katz & others" like the guy from Duke that now does a lot of analysis and games for ESPN. None of them would agree with this utter shit you guys are throwing out.
And they guy "who lives near Chapel Hill & has friends and really a knows" so we should all consider him credible...how many championships over the years did Dean Smith win?? Are you going to claim he's overrated?
Who you think you are TexasGator? You the all mighty of college b-ball opinions? Yours and no one else's matters? How about your opinion is utter shit? Everyone has the same thought except you, and you come on here telling us we are wrong? STFU!!!
At least I back my arguments up with real talk about other coaches, how they've faired with top recruiting classes, how many championships they've won, what kinds of Xs & Os they run...like Jhova pointing out that w Williams it all starts at the PG play...Donovan and Patric Young's development. A few of you guys have brought "Roy sucks." "Roy is overrated" I mentioned winning %s and how Calipari, Coach K, Boeheim, Brad Stevens have done...and you say, my friends around Chapel Hill think Roy is "overrated too." Brilliant. Add value with something tangible or how do you say it, "STFU"...like a whining child when he's been proven a fool. Either way, welcome to the BLOCK!!!
Maybe some don't remember but when we took Miller he called Billy D a cheater.
He has and always is a douche to me.
Wrong...2009 was 100% Roy Williams team.
