@YahooSports: Sources tell @TheRecruitScoop that UCLA will fire men's basketball coach Ben Howland on Sunday: http://t.co/vEgNOR0uo3
Brooklyn is heartbroken
Ohhh let's doooo it
ooorrrannngeeee and bluuueee it
The thing that sucks is Billy Donovan's name is apparently on their wish list. I don't think he goes, but I don't like distractions. Especially this time of the year. With his son transferring to uf and his daughter close by, I'm not even sure if he takes the phone call. I hope not!
JMac : Everybody saw this coming , I just hope the recruits don't decommit and the new coach can land Rysheed Jordan
Billy is on every schools wish list. If he didn't leave for UK, he isn't leaving to ucla IMO
I agree. I just hate the distraction part of it all.
If Billy didn't go to UK he is not going to UCLA.
They should go after Brad Stevens as mentioned above.
I don't think they'll get a big time, straight laced coach. There next coach will have some baggage IMO.
Maybe they will go after Cal?
UK is better job than UCLA
It won't be a distraction when everyone knows he's not leaving. Dude turned down a NBA job for crying out loud.
National Director of Scouting & Recruiting Analyst
No Cain, no gain.
Billy the Kid, age 48,
5 SEC Championships,
2 National Championships...
Maybe they want to get him out to avoid any trouble with the NCAA.
who cares who they get, it won't be Billy and they will continue to be mediocre
Strongly disagree that UCLA is still not a top 5 job in country / extremely appealing to a top tier / hot coach
1. tradition - true blue blood along w/ KU, sUK etc
2. new $100Mill pauley pavilion
3. fertile recruiting ground w/in 100 miles + all of Cali etc
4. LA -- LA sells itself to kids (see USC football etc)
5. They can pay a guy whatever he wants basically
6. flagship adidas school
I agree though, Tom Izzo, Billy D, Sean Miller etc are not switching jobs but in theory they could get a Shaka Smart maybe or whoever the young hot coaches are that coach at a non top tier program that are not inline to have their names put on a court
maybe a Buzz Williams type etc would kill for that job.....Brad Stevens is an odd ball, no idea what is important to him, sort of like Boise St football coach Peterson
key for UF is to pounce on whatever big man transfers shake free from this coaching carousel IMO
An interesting potential discussion...who are everyone's top 5 jobs in the current landscape of college basketball? Have to count TV contracts and viewership and everything else that goes into the equation...
Some starter talk...
For Coach Donovan to replace the house in LA compared to his house in Gainesville they would have to increase his $3.7salary by 50%. I am not worried about another college job. If the Knicks tried to hire him I woud be very worried. When Coach D backed out on the Majic he signed a 5 yr agreement to not coach anywhere else in the NBA. The 5 yrs has expired. The NBA is the biggest concern
agree w/ Gerry's list....those are the blue bloods....still would incl UCLA in that list, just like Indiana job post Kelvin Sampson and when Tom Crean took over -- total mess w/ only walk ons on roster BUT still a monster job + UCLA roster in MUCH better shape vs IU at the time -- they got Wear twins still, powell, jordan adams, likely T Parker + K Anderson -- roster most coaches kill to have
UCLA = blue blood IMO
next wave woudl think
in order -- Zona, LVille, CUse, Florida, UConn, OSU, GTown, MSU, U Mich,
then maybe the next wave after NC State, Maryland, Memphis , Villanova etc
also dont think anyone concerned about BD taking another college job, if he turned down sUK , he isnt uprooting his family to go to LA etc.....only concern is NBA
on that front , i view it differently -- after passing up Magic w/ a good roster incl Dwight .....struggle to see BD getting offered an elite NBA job ?? Lakers arent calling, Knicks arent calling, celtics arent calling etc .....if anything he would get an offer from bobcats or new orleans pelicans or something at this point.....just cant imagine him taking a total reclamation project where the squad is likely to go 15-67 for 4 yrs straight before they have any hope of even sniffing the 500 or the playoffs IMO
recipe to get fired in 3-4 yrs IMO and then have to come back to college game and coach somewhere else ....not sure worth it at this point
Here is my take on present day status, this is not all time. To me, UCLA is a lot like Notre Dame, a program with a lot of tradition, tradition that was a long time ago. Kids today are more interested in the tier 1 schools i listed than they are UCLA IMO.
Not sure if im even close to the tiers on this. Florida is more of a low pressure job because we're a football school, and if you succeed we pay you a lot. The problem is our basketball fan base support sucks and the O'Dome is in desperate need of an upgrade. Plus its hard to recruit basketball players to a football school.

I wonder if USC would go after Howland if he got fired by UCLA.
I don't think Donovan will leave Florida, the basketball program is his legacy, like Dean Smith at UNC. Donovan built this program, it's his baby and he's been here for such a long time and already turned down the NBA i don't think he wants to leave.
It would be nice if someday down the road, the school built a basketball arena only for the basketball team (or maybe include an IPF!) and they named it the Billy Donovan Arena.
