This may be one of the best coaching jobs the billy d has ever done. No one expected to go this far at the beginning of the year. We have no player on our team that is a first round pick yet he got us the sec championship and the third straight elite 8.
This being said next year we will potentially have 3 first rounders so the rest of the NCAA better watch out because we are going to break the elite 8 hump!
A lot of people don't understand just how great Billy D is and how much this team overachieved. It's hilarious how everyone forgets that preseason, no one had expectations and everyone thought this was gonna be a long, horrible season.
We were preseason top 10. Not saying it wasn't a great coaching job. Just not sure I buy the whole "Nobody expected us to do anything".
Great season...the thing is we have said basically the same thing the last 3, that we have overachieved (which is true) and BD did a great job (which he did)....we have to upgrade our talent to take the next step.....moer post guys who can score, more depth, etc.....we made 3 Elite 8s in a row with 2 NBA starting caliber players the whole run, CP 2 years ago and Beal last year.....just shows how much we have done, and how much we have lacked in truly elite talent....
no one thought we were going to be horrible...but I agree we played above our talent for sure
SEC Champs and 29 wins makes this a great year.Great coaching job by Coach Donovan and the coaching staff!
I agree...no low post scoring on this team and not real long out front. Really good coaching job by the staff this year.
Love Billy D. We have to recruit better though for sure. In game few are better, but we need to get talent yearly to compete the recruiting slumps for a few years and transfers and players leaving early really hurt us.
While I see what you're saying, I definitely remember people expecting this to be a down year and saying we were ranked too high preseason. Then we started running through a weak conference and everyone forgot all that. Now you got people comparing this year's team to last year's baseball team.
How many McDonald's All-Americans or other high level recruits does a team need before some expectations are warranted?
Did one player improve his draft stock this year? What team did we upset? What team did we beat in a close game?
We blew out teams that weren't on our level and lost the rest.
Not a bigger Billy D fan than me and I think he did a good job this year, but I just don't understand how we overachieved.
Thank you. Any negativety gets down voted and swarmed on here because these delusional homers say "we will never lose" but then when we do they say "oh no we are great no faults here we tried hard guys!!!" It's hilarious. To get upvotes all you need to do is something delusional like we go 14-0 and win by 40 every game...oh crapppp what a great thread. Then after a loss go OH WE TRIED SO HARD GUYS GREAT EFFORT and somehow get upvotes. This team underachieved; we lost with three seniors in a conference tournament, and to the first good team we faced in the tourney by a large margin. Reality is this team didn't overachieve..they underachieved. This Elite eight was paved for us....14-11-15 seed. Last years team we stepped up vs good teams this years didn't.
Is Pat coming back?
IMO, we overachieved bc we aren't a top 8 team, yet made the Elite Eight.
Very true. We certainly were not a huge surprise. The frustrating thing is that we just seem so outmatched at most positions in the floor when we play decent teams. Part of leading a program is recruiting and in that responsibility, Billy is getting a solid C. In fact, things seem to have reversed from his earlier days. He used to bring in prime talent and not get much credit for his coaching. Now, he gets more credit for the coaching part. But today, he gets and F for everything. The game plan sucked and UF was outmatched at every position on the floor in athleticism and basketball ability.
I don't get the "we over achieved" thing. I agree with Aussie and others. UF was an older team and had 3 McDonalds AA's in KB, Mike Ro, and Pat, and Murph was a Parade All American. The starting 5 were all Junior's and Senior's and they have experienced 2 Elite 8's already.

None of those guys are NBA caliber, whether anyone wants to accept it or not. Which one of those guys could you give the rock to and say "go get us a basket."?
Well when you put it like that, Kentucky has 4 or 5 NBA caliber players and they suck. Just because you have NBA caliber players doesn't mean you are good and just because you don't have any NBA caliber players doesn't mean you are bad. Louisville doesn't have any major NBA caliber players and they are the best team by far. Fact is UF has the talent.
You're absolutely right that NBA players =\= a great team.
And UF was good this year. Damn good. But we weren't elite and we weren't a top 8 team in the country. With one NBA caliber player on our squad we would've been, though. We were with Beal and we were with Chandler and them.
The Elite Eight, IMO, was an overachievement.
I did, I definitely was looking forward to the 2013-14 season because of the transfers and 2 superstars coming in. I thought we'd be lucky to be in the Top 25. Billy D is as good as it gets, and Michigan was just a flat out better team than us. They have at least 3 NBA players with Mcgary, Burke, and the big freshman. We will have that next year. I was watching K Hill and C Walk highlights yesterday and man are those two special. Dunk City could reside in G ville next season.
McGary is the big freshman
I was talking about the Ilgauskas guy then (no idea if that's how you say it, or spell it).
Lol mich big scorer vs UF is staukus.. Kid is strictly a 3pt specialist that got open looks due to burke and fact we went zone with 3 6 1" guards that can't recover to corner/Mike Ro fell asleep on his assignments
Mich has 2 first rders in burke, mcgary at critical spots (pg/center), two 2nd rders in hardaway, robinson. 2 serviceable backup bigs and a 3pt specialist
Cuse has 2-3 draftable pros in mike williams, then triche, southerland, cj fair + tons depth
Lville has deng as a 1st rder, harrell is a monster, then 4-5 guys who will play 10yrs somewhere/have size /scoring ability with behanan, blackshear, montrzl and then savvy vets siva/russ smith
UFs uneven recruiting has hurt us, fact we have 3 frosh that likely get recruited over and 2 transfers that can't play killed our depth. Instead of dev walker/dillon g needed a another soph/jr PF/SF hybrid like prather/yeguette and another 4/5 junkyard dog type kid who can bang/rebound in spurts when PY got in foul trouble (had to go zone and got burned)
Our recruiting inconsistency / mass transfers (kadji/channey/pitchford / larson / nimrod ) has been our biggest hinderace to getting to next level post 04ers + staff turnover...falls on BD to see if he is motivated to work as hard recruiting as a 35yr old BD or if he thinks his 2 rings and 500 wins entitles him to sit back and let the recruits beat down his door (which has happened but not enough to be more than what we are now as a program/roster)
No shame in going hard after transfers, foreign bigs, canadians, JUCOs etc also if need be - glad we embraced transfers - program would have been far worse off without macklin, mike ro and DFS/harris going fw
Very good season when you win your conference and get to the Elite Eight. Anyone who argues that is just silly. From a historical perspective most focus little on how you win championships or how you get to a Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four, etc. Primary focus is that you get there. Florida Fans will always be able to say their program has won TWO National Championships, been to FOUR Final Fours, SEVEN Elite Eights, NINE Sweet Sixteens, and I believe 17 NCAA tournaments.
UF...ASSOC OF AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES MEMBER...3-TIME FOOTBALL NATL CHAMPION..2-TIME BASKETBALL NATL CHAMPION..31 ATHLETIC NATL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
