Bottom line: We need more NBA talent on our roster

  • UF is an all-sport school IMO.

Hyposthetically, if we sucked in football, baseball, etc. and basketball was hands down our best program, would we be viewed as a basketball school?

The odome is average even in the sec man...sorry but as far as great basketball arenas....the odome isn't one. The renovation is so desperately needed. Bad video screens, cheap looking. I love being there, but its not an elite gym by any means. The renovation looks awesome and will make the odome probably the best arena besides rupp in the sec...but right now is kind of blah. Especially after looking across the street at the swamp which is one of the best stadiums.

I didn't say the ODome was a premier facility. But it is far from being a "bad arena."

Matter of fact, your post(s) should probably be deleted. Regardless of how ridiculous they are, we all know players and prospects read these boards and you just proclaimed UF to be a piece of shit when it comes to basketball.

not at all...I just outlined the challneges we face when recruiting against the blue bloods...if you don't think other coaches and programs don't point this out, then you are mistaken...they do, all the time..kids only come here for BD 99% of the time....that is reality

compared to big time schools (who we compete with for most big time prospects) it is "bad" though...hope the remodel happens soon!

sadly yes that is how it works....or the perception anyway....

  • not sure how this thread go so off course....my apoligies...only trying to discuss the small thing holding us back from competing for NC every season....I certainly have zero complaints with our program as a whole or our HOF coach....as long as we get Walker into school, we are set next season and it will be all about chemistry and how quickly the team gels...this would be a great offseason for a Canada or Europe trip in the offseason....

And now the Calipari's and Matta's of the world have a manifesto authored by our preeminent basketball Cyrano to use as ammo as well.

  • Donovan recruits well for where he is. Boynton, young, beal, walker, hill...some big names come here for a school viewed as a football school. Problem is we don't get enough all at once. Duke and unc and Kansas and UK get three to four mcdonalds players a year...we don't. We get one max two and role players or players needing development.

Next year...we may be in the perfect mold of what we need. Two star recruits, vet players with team mindset and great defensive ability, a four year solid player in frazier and walker, and two needed transfers.

Billy isn't going to best the big boys by matching them in recruits yearly...he needs to kind of build for a one or two years run every few years by building talent for a few years and then landing a big recruit or two and transfers to finish off the senior class like we will next year.

Only problem is...if UK gets wiggins...god they will be good. Will be uf vs UK for the sec next year for sure and the rest of the conference well behind besides maybe Tennessee.

good pionts, and truth be told, Beal was supposed to be our closer this year as a Soph, and until his late season surge, he was coming back...heck, he wanted to come back as it was, but BD did the right thing for the kid and really encouraged him to go...if you are a top 3 pick, you almost have to go....and no one thought coming into the season he would play himself into a top 3 pick....it happens.....I am glad we have a coach that looks out for best interests of others, Beal in this case, over his agenda....

    Bullis33

  • By four year solid player in frazier i meant players developing who will be four year guys...said it wrong.

I'm selfish as a uf fan. I'd rather he go tenth and join a decent franchise than were he went which is a hell hole lol.

If we had beal...easily number 1 seed. We don't lose to UK, mizzou, and Arizona with beal.

Shouldn't have lost to any of them even without him.

love Mike...I think he goes from 6ppg to 10-11 next year with more PT and a better drive game....

    Bullis33

  • Agreed we shouldn't have which is why I'm so frustrated. But no way we lose it with him. He proved late he can be the go to guy and this year we see it in his hands late.

He rebounds well too which seems to be forgotten. But yea if he plays 24-27 mins a game kid will be 14-16 a game I think. If he can start driving...oh man. But next year having hill drive and Finn drive and walker inside being a post presense...man frazier is going to get a ton of kick out threes. Kid can just stand in place and wait for the pass lol

    ryan596

  • No, I've just never seen you post so often in a short amount of time. I do that too when I get drunk and pissed! I was at Rupp and felt like we were in control, but knew we had to finish... We didn't! Let's just get ready for the NCAAs.

  • Young would be foolish to go pro after this year IMO.

He is only 6'8", not a huge shot blocker like Noel and his offensive game needs work.

I hope Young stays, he should if he wants to make it in the NBA.

every year to really have the best chance to win NC and get to FF.....in close games where it matters most, you need 2-3 NBA 1st rd pick caliber players that can go get a basket and make plays.....BD does an awesome job building really great all around teams, and recruits as well as he can at a football school with a bad arena, and mediocre fan support (has been very good this season though)..but as good as we have been the last 3 seasons, outside of Beal, we have lacked this star power, and he was a FR last season.....I am not sure there is a good answer for this as BD is a great recruiter and we get a lot of great kids looking at us, but just seem to miss on the 1 or 2 more impact guys to put us over the top....this is not to say you cannot win a NC without 3 sure fire NBA talents on your team, but it makes it a lot easier when you have them....Duke won in a down year in 2009 with little NBA talent, and UCONN rode Kemba to a title in a down year, so there are exceptions, but even with Kemba, he was a guy that could take over games and make plays when it counted....we should have 3 surefire NBA kids on next year's team in Kasey, DFS and Walker (please get into school) but 2 will be FR....NBA players that can take over a game and make plays make coaches look a whole lot better....again, BD recruits about as well as he can at a school like UF, but look at this year's team, there is not 1 surefire 10 year NBA impact guy on the team....I think Erik and PY will be solid rotation guys in the NBA, but no guarantee for either.....

As well as BD has recruited at UF (really cannot complain) we are always going to lose more kids than we get to the blueblood schools ie Duke, UNC, KU, UK, UCLA, etc.....

    Agree 100%.

  • It's not Donovan's fault that a 5 star, premiere guard in Boynton is a choke artist. I really like Boynton and typically defend him, but I mean seriously.. I'm just ready for a new cast of guards, Scottie at the 2 spot and Kasey running this team.

I know he will be a freshman but he's played with both Frazier/Walker before and is a mature kid. He will have his struggles early but has all the tools to be a phenom next season. It doesn't hurt that he will potentially have 3 NBA guys with him in Walker, DFS, and Pat.. Hell even Harris has NBA potential.

I'm not giving up on this season, but I don't see us making a run unless we start playing smarter basketball.
