Bottom line: We need more NBA talent on our roster

  • every year to really have the best chance to win NC and get to FF.....in close games where it matters most, you need 2-3 NBA 1st rd pick caliber players that can go get a basket and make plays.....BD does an awesome job building really great all around teams, and recruits as well as he can at a football school with a bad arena, and mediocre fan support (has been very good this season though)..but as good as we have been the last 3 seasons, outside of Beal, we have lacked this star power, and he was a FR last season.....I am not sure there is a good answer for this as BD is a great recruiter and we get a lot of great kids looking at us, but just seem to miss on the 1 or 2 more impact guys to put us over the top....this is not to say you cannot win a NC without 3 sure fire NBA talents on your team, but it makes it a lot easier when you have them....Duke won in a down year in 2009 with little NBA talent, and UCONN rode Kemba to a title in a down year, so there are exceptions, but even with Kemba, he was a guy that could take over games and make plays when it counted....we should have 3 surefire NBA kids on next year's team in Kasey, DFS and Walker (please get into school) but 2 will be FR....NBA players that can take over a game and make plays make coaches look a whole lot better....again, BD recruits about as well as he can at a school like UF, but look at this year's team, there is not 1 surefire 10 year NBA impact guy on the team....I think Erik and PY will be solid rotation guys in the NBA, but no guarantee for either.....

As well as BD has recruited at UF (really cannot complain) we are always going to lose more kids than we get to the blueblood schools ie Duke, UNC, KU, UK, UCLA, etc.....

  • Yeah, I think this is the real reason we lose close games. We don't have that one guy who thrives under pressure. Erv was like that. I think KB has the mentality, but his shooting mechanics is so out of whack, that he just isn't a high probability shooter. Wish he would drive it more.

    Jonas

  • Btw, I think our recruiting will pick up. We are getting a new arena and it seems like the UAA is making a better effort getting fans to the game. Combined with our recent success and having two young great recruiters on staff, i think we can keep up the momentum. I'm sure the back to back NIT years stalled a lot of the positive momentum after two back to back NCs.

    Jonas

  • see my comments in one of the other threads bullis started

    anthony bennett sure wouldve helped

really a need to get bigger/more athletic at guard spots will make all the difference....MikeRo is a fine fine college guard but isnt a guy who can get buckets going to rim vs a 6 3" type 2 guard (or get a good shot off) + KB is the same....both excellent college guards but not guys that strike fear in the heart of opposing defenses

BD said it best himself...he knows the problem -- now needs to fix it : he has said plenty of times recently that this team has no lotto/first rders on it and guys need to be unselfish and get their teammates open shots cuz no one is capable of doing that on their own....

have gotten away from good ball movement last few weeks no question

    chomps2007

  • Luckily next year the NBA talent will be here.

    tbull22

  • recruiting has lacked no question last 2-3 yrs at that critical 2/3 spot....missing AB could have been huge this yr

Beal being a 1 and done didnt help

Prather, slowly coming along is not great...was expected to be more effective im sure by his Jr yr

Larson was a waste of scholly , same for Pitchford leaving.....could have had another 1-2 developed 2/3 guys in those spots

@ in kenny and murphy's year....really needed a more athletic 3 in that recruiting class...kid would be a Sr this yr who in theory we could count on to drive / get buckets at rim

no instant reloading in college bball o/s of sUK.....2-3 yrs of not great recruiting and recruiting misses take time to overcome....in theory by next yr UF will be in a better spot except at the 4/5 spot if PY goes pro early

    chomps2007

  • This offense is legit, but it would be unstoppable with some elite athletic wing players.

That in itself will help the lack of ft attempts and scoring lulls that this team goes through.

  • If I'm a fan trolling and want some material to tear down UF's hoops program, I am copying and pasting this like crazy.

How the hell is The O'Dome a "bad arena?" Holds close to 13k. Student section is awesome. Place gets loud and intimidating. No bad sight lines. Located at the center of campus. It's clean and in good shape.

And UF is not a "football school." That's a myth. If that's all we cared about, our AD would not be busy tying up valuable real estate that could be used for the all-important indoor football practice facility worrying about trivial things like a lacrosse stadium, a dedicated basketball practice facility and a top-notch soccer/outdoor track arena. We're an all-sports school. And I like it that way. The average UF fan may care a bit more about football than any other sport, but that does not make us a "football school."

And what an obvious premise - "we need more NBA talent on our roster." Duh. Who doesn't? Pat Williams of the Orlando Magic upvoted this post.

This team has shown us this season that the talent and ability to win at high levels are there. NBA talent doesn't always equate to mental and emotional toughness. That's what this team lacks. Not an upper-echelon arena, a coach succeeding despite the odds being stacked against him, as your post insinuates....seriously, if UF could not support a basketball program, we wouldn't BE supporting a top-notch basketball program. I give Billy all the credit in the world for what he has done here and he is probably the best coach UF has ever employed, regardless of sport. But to insinuate he is just doing what he's done here with nothing more than a stiff upper lip and a lot of elbow grease is just dumb.

I still love you EB. This post just rubbed me the wrong way.

we will have to agree to disagree,....I have been to games at most upper tier bball schools, and Duke aside, the Odome is a dump comparitively....and we are a football school....we do very very well in a lot of sports, thanks to the best AD in the biz, but we are not now, nor ever will be a basketball school, that is not changing...I would bet after BD leaves we have a steep drop off within 2-3 years as a program, that is reality IMO...he is the best coach in any sport in UF history, but our fan support is poor compared to real bball schools, football will always be king at UF (this has caused us to miss on some top kids that loved BD....many top bball kids want to go to a school where they can be king on campus)....the same way UCONN will drop off now that Calhoun is gone, etc, we will after BD leaves...you throw in all that and the fact we do not cheat or even bend the rules and it is remarkable how much talent we have attracted over the years....with the guys we have doing so well in the NBA, and a HOF coach, it should be much easier for us to get top kids most every year, but we still struggle some due to the factors I have mentioned....we had fans streaming out in large numbers on SR night with 4 min left, that about says it all...that would NEVER happen at a bball school....NEVER.....we should feel lucky BD is so damn loyal to Foley and UF, because at times, BD has deserved better....I bet once Foley retires BD leaes UF pretty quick after that....

how so....are you saying in general we do not need more NBA talent on our team year in, year out to consistently reach the next level?

    Bullis33

  • Yeah, we are just going to have to disagree. There's so much stuff in that post with which I disagree. But rather than toss our program through the wringer in a public forum any further, because I am sure you'll try to come up with counter-points, I am just going to leave the sleeping dogs lying.

I'm not sold on DFS and Chris Walker being better go to scores than the guys we lose from this years team . Kasey Hill needs to be really good.

The odome is average even in the sec man...sorry but as far as great basketball arenas....the odome isn't one. The renovation is so desperately needed. Bad video screens, cheap looking. I love being there, but its not an elite gym by any means. The renovation looks awesome and will make the odome probably the best arena besides rupp in the sec...but right now is kind of blah. Especially after looking across the street at the swamp which is one of the best stadiums.

  • Matter of fact, your post(s) should probably be deleted. Regardless of how ridiculous they are, we all know players and prospects read these boards and you just proclaimed UF to be a piece of shit when it comes to basketball.
