RB Matt Jones returned to practice in pads on Tuesday and is on pace to return vs. Miami.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida running back Matt Jones returned to practice in pads for the first time on Tuesday afternoon, coach Will Muschamp announced Wednesday.
The junior is still out for the season opener against Toledo but is on track for a return to the lineup against Miami in Week 2.
"Matt was in pads yesterday and ran around a good bit," Muschamp said. "We tried to bang him around a little bit, and I think he's a little sore this morning."
Jones rushed for 275 yards and three touchdowns a year ago on 52 carries and was slated to go into the season as the starter.
However, he was sidelined in late July with a viral infection that caused him to miss Florida's entire fall camp. He lost 8-10 pounds but has since recovered the weight as Florida's medical staff has slowly worked him back into playing condition.
"Same status as far as on track for playing next week," Muschamp said. "He won't be available Saturday, but probably will take him through pregame, honestly to put him in a uniform and get him out there in the heat and let him run around a little bit and just continue to acclimate his body and get back with it."
