Lack of Free Throws a Concern

Florida's concerns about late-game management grew after the loss to Missouri but the Gators have another issue – an inability to get to the free throw line for easy points

Good point . The team also didn't do a great job hitting the FT's the few times they went to the line in the second half

    • Its kind of hard to get free throws when we barely drive to the rim in some games. Rosario, Wilbekin, and Boynton are all capable but all decide to settle for threes in certain games.

    • Good read Marty.

    • To further illustrate the point, and I wish I had done the research before the story, out of 345 Division I-A teams, only 15 have taken fewer free throws than Florida, and eight of those have played fewer games, including a number of Ivy League teams who have played only 22, or three fewer. Those are not good numbers

    • Clearly our biggest weakness. The lack of size (I don't just mean height but girth as well) underneath will hurt us in the tournament. Young busts his ass but he is not an offensive threat. Murphy is really more of a Eurpoean style big man. And our guards don't seem eager to take it to the hoop. Thus...no fouls and no foul shots. Good teams will know this and take advantage.

I have been thinking about this stat a good bit. If you are ahead by 15 or more points in all wins, then you are ahead too much for teams to foul you trying to get back into the game. So UF this year is won 21 games by margins such that opponents did not bother to foul UF late in the game. UF lost two games UAR and KSU so that UF would be the one fouling not the opponent.

That means there were two chances for opponents to foul UF to get back in the game. In the Zona game they actually did foul Boynton one time and he missed the front end of a one and one. In the Missouri game, they came back on UF without resorting to fouling.

So if in half UF's wins the opponent had been close enough to foul two or three or four times trying to get back in the game, UF would have taken a much more normal number of free throws. That was certainly the case last year when UF played more close games, but led in many.

That stat has more to do with style of play, more so than margin of victory, imo.

UF is ranked 325th in the country, on 2pt attempts, and 40th on 3pt attempts.

Keep in mind, UF is just an avg defensive rebounding team. That's what the main difference of the Mizzu gm was. They are one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the nation, and maybe the best rebounding unit overall.
