GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida got off to a slow start after missing two tackles on the opening kickoff and another on a short pass to the right sideline. Jacksonville State's Kevyn Cooper raced up the right sideline on a 76-yard catch, bringing the Gamecocks all the way to the Florida 7-yard line on the first play from scrimmage.
Sophomore quarterback Jacoby Brissett led Florida to a 23-0 win over Jacksonville State at the starter Saturday.
But the Gators buckled down defensively and forced a field goal attempt. The Gamecocks missed it from 25 yards, and Florida motored through to another gritty win.
Florida answered with a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession, capped by a Mike Gillislee 7-yard touchdown run. The Gators ran on all but one play on the drive, asserting their will early on as it cruised to a 23-0 win.
Senior kicker Caleb Sturgis added a 21-yard field goal later in the first quarter to increase the lead to 10-0. He hit three field goals on the afternoon and sits just one shy of tying Jeff Chandler's school record of 67 career field goals.
The Gators went into the half up 10-0 after the teams traded missed field goals. The Gamecocks missed wide right from 36 and Sturgis had a 27-yarder blocked.
Jon Bostic put Florida back on the board early in the third quarter after a Kyle Christy pinned Jacksonville State deep in its own territory with a punt. On 3rd down, Bostic pick off Gamecocks quarterback Marques Ivory and ran it back seven yards for a touchdown, putting the Gators up 17-0.
Sturgis then connected on field goals of 44 and 47 early in the fourth quarter to increase the final margin to 23-0.
No. 6 Florida will take on No. 10 Florida State in Tallahassee next weekend in a game that begins at 3:30 p.m. ET.
