Grochowski leaves impression on Meyer

Typically, it's not easy for a kicker to leave a lasting impression on Florida head coach Urban Meyer. But Daniel Grochowski (6-3, 205, Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) received just that type of opportunity recently.

Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer watched from the sidelines as Daniel Grochowski of Sarasota Riverview kicked a 57-yard field goal against Bradenton Manatee on October 22nd.

During Florida's bye week in October, the Florida coaching staff hit the road on Friday night to take in a number of high school games from around the state. Meyer attended the Manatee-Riverview game in Sarasota to watch soon-to-be running back commit Mike Blakely in person. With just seconds remaining before the half, and Riverview down 21-3, Rams coach John Sprague decided to send Grochowski in to attempt a 57-yard field goal. Then, something miraculous happened.

Grochowski split the uprights with his kick. With some room to spare, no less.

Meyer was impressed, emphatically signaling on the sideline that the field goal was good. It comes as no surprise he was in contact with the kicker shortly after he returned to Gainesville.

"I called the Florida coaches on Tuesday," Grochowski explained. "Meyer got on the phone, and the first thing he said was, 'holy balls, you can kick!'"

While I was unable to confirm whether Meyer would actually use the expression "holy balls," there is no denying he was impressed with the kick.

"(The Florida coaches) basically said I really have a leg," he continued in regards to the conversation. "A 57-yard field goal isn't something you see too often."

Grochowski currently reports offers from both Army and Navy. He is still in touch with a few programs in hopes of earning more offers.

"The main schools I've been in touch with are Ohio State, Michigan and Florida," Grochowski added. "I've also sent film to North Carolina, Clemson, LSU and Virginia."

As it is with most kickers, Grochowski understands that patience is a virtue in regards to getting the right offer.

"We'll see what schools show interest," he said. "Florida told me they don't know what they will do with the kicker position, yet. Whether they will offer a scholarship, give me a grayshirt, or try to bring me in as a preferred walk-on. We'll just wait-and-see."

Grochowski remains in contact with the Florida staff on a weekly basis in the meantime. He has connected on 6-of-8 field goals this season, and has converted all 41 of the extra points he's attempted this fall as well.
