Florida running back commit Kelvin Taylor was one of the nearly 150 athletes selected to take part in Nike’s ‘The Opening’ over this weekend. The Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.) star has certainly been impressed by his first few days at Nike Headquarters.
“It’s perfect, great weather out here, everybody out here is competing hard,” Taylor said. “It’s the best of the best out here. We’re just competing hard and trying to get each other better.”
Taylor is one of seven Florida Gator commits taking part in the event. This road trip with his fellow classmates is one he will not forget.
“It’s great, you only get to do this once in a lifetime,” Taylor said. “We’re just taking advantage of it, soaking it all in, it’s a lots of memories.”
During the first day of competition the athletes participated in the SPARQ combine testing. Taylor, who weighed in at 215-pounds, ran a reported 4.63-second forty and a 4.3-second short shuttle.
“I think I did OK, but never in my career had I done SPARQ, so some of the drills I wasn’t too sure. On the forty I got to get my technique better, but it was alright. I just need to work on the combine stuff.”
Much of day two included 7-on-7 and drills against linebackers. The work against the nation’s best is one the five-star running back feels is helping improve his play.
“It helps me a lot. We got the best linebackers out here, safeties, cornerbacks, quarterbacks everything...There is just a lot of competing going on.”
Taylor is still on track to enroll at the University of Florida in January.
